It looks like one of The Rookies cops is in for big things in season 9!

The Rookie has gotten used to adding new characters to the LAPD in order to keep living up to the title. Among them was Miles Penn (Deric Augustine), who joined in season 7. Technically, Miles wasn’t quite a rookie, as he’d had a couple of years as a cop in Texas before moving to L.A. and had a learning curve to handle the new city.

Miles has had his ups and downs, from living out of his car to getting in trouble with his superiors and even being suspended for going too far on a case. Thankfully, he stayed on the force, and speaking to TV Insider, Augustine confirmed season 9 will see Miles graduate to a full patrol officer.

“I think he’s going to be thrilled that he’s not a rookie anymore. Especially in Season 8, we see him make a lot of mistakes and learn from them. So, I’m excited about that journey to see how he not relies on his cowboy instincts but really relies on the teachings of his TOs, the three TOs he had and the intellect he learned from the mistakes that he has fortunately learned from, He’s learning. He’s adapting.”

Augustine continued by saying he hopes to see Miles adapt to being a real cop and “having his independence.” Now the question is who will join him.

Who will be Miles’ TO?

While Miles is no longer a rookie, he will still be partnered with a veteran officer on the streets. He had started with Bradford (who, of course, put him through brutal training), then Nolan, and most recently Nyla. Augustine hinted that while he loved working with Mekia Cox, he’d like to see Miles go full circle.

“Maybe I want to go back with Tim, honestly. That would be cool. To see him graduate under the teachings of Tim, maybe he comes back as a TO just to see Miles off and to see him be successful. ‘I started with him; I’m finishing him.’ That would be cool. But I love Nyla, too.”

Up in the air is if Miles will find any romance. He has been hitting it off with Celina, but it’s ambiguous if that will lead to anything serious. Also, it is unclear if Miles will try to connect with former fellow rookie Seth Ridley. The two had been friends until Miles learned Seth was a pathological liar. Still, season 8 saw Miles try to help Seth out of a funk when he lost a leg and had to leave the force.

However it unfolds, Augustine seems excited as fans to see Miles move up on The Rookie and be a capable cop.

The Rookie is streaming on Hulu.
