Tom Selleck is set to return to TV for his first role post-Blue Bloods.
Deadline reports that the 81-year-old actor has signed on for a guest spot in an untitled, upcoming Apple TV series. The comedy stars Elizabeth Banks as Heidi, a single mom who wants to start a new chapter following her messy divorce. However, she soon finds herself "coordinating her father's retirement community escapades" and, as a result, allies with her father's girlfriend's son.
It's unclear how many episodes Selleck will appear in or who his character will be, but the role will reunite him with his former co-star Ted Danson, who plays Banks' father. The two starred in the 1987 comedy Three Men and a Baby, along with its 1990 sequel, Three Men and a Lady.
Other cast members include Rob Delaney, Jared Goldstein, Spencer Moss, Katey Sagal, Hamish Linklater, Michelle Buteau, and Simu Liu.
Tom Selleck was frustrated by Blue Bloods' cancellation
In 2024, Selleck went on Danson's podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, and expressed his disappointment with CBS for canceling Blue Bloods.
"We'd already taken a 25% pay cut," Selleck revealed. "Nobody wanted to leave. Everybody was gonna stay on. That's hard to get. It may be some kind of record to have the same cast intact for that length of time."
The actor also cited Blue Bloods' ratings as a reason the show could have kept going, saying, "Out of the top 100 shows on broadcast television, Blue Bloods was number six in our 15th year."
When asked to explain why the network cancelled the long-running cop drama, CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach told Deadline, "We love this cast, we love their passion for the show. All shows have to come to an end. It’s important to us to refresh the schedule. We are going to end the show come December.”
Blue Bloods ran for 14 seasons and spanned over 290 episodes before ending in 2024. The show followed the Reagans, a multigenerational family of law enforcement officers residing in New York. Cast members included Donnie Wahlberg, Will Estes, Bridget Moynahan, Len Cariou, Steve Schirripa, and more.
The show currently has a spinoff, Boston Blue, which follows Wahlberg's Danny Reagan as he takes a position with the Boston Police Department to be closer to his son, Sean, a rookie beat cop. Danny is partnered with detective Lena Silver, a member of the illustrious Silver family, who, like the Reagans, made law enforcement the family business.
The first season of Boston Blue aired in 2025, and season 2 airs this fall on CBS.
