Ingrid suggests that a child may not really be sick in Watson season 1, episode 8. At least, not by natural causes.
You’ve heard of the term Munchausen by Proxy. It’s a condition that comes up in a lot of TV shows like this, and it has roots in real life. In fact, Gypsey Rose Blanchard is one of the most famous victims of Munchausen by Proxy, and there have been many shows and movies made about her.
Now it’s time for Watson to focus on this condition. Is it something as “simple” as this, though?
The team get to the bottom of bouts of staring in Watson season 1, episode 8
It all starts when a young boy, who is sure to remind Watson of his dear friend Sherlock Holmes — if the character is as we would expect based on the source material — comes into the clinic for help. His mom has brought him in, asking about why her son keeps staring off into the distance.
Well, it turns out that some seizures can make people just stare off into the distance. It’s something that has come up in recent medical dramas, such as Brilliant Minds, but it remains a condition that a lot of people still overlook. John isn’t about to overlook it, though.
It doesn’t appear like there is a route cause for these potential seizures, though. Ingrid suggests that the boy is suffer from the seizures due to Munchausen by Proxy. In other words, the mom is making her son sick, and this can lead to some serious effects in the future. Not only does the boy suffer from illnesses when he doesn’t have to, but he can end up learning the truth and then trying to figure out what is true about his life.
This diagnosis does seem a little too “easy” for John and his team, though. We’re sure to see something much more complicated.
