The season 8 finale saw the team working to bring international crime boss Heath Everett back into custody after he managed to pull off yet another prison escape while being transported to the court for his hearing. Luckily, the team was able to find Everett before he could flee the country, but it seems that we have not seen the last of Everett and that he ended up getting the last laugh in the end.
As The Rookie season 8 finale came to a close, Chenford fans got to witness the long-awaited proposal for the beloved couple. The moment of excitement was short-lived, though, when the pair were jumped by a couple on the beach.
“Heath Everett says payback is a bitch," the woman told Tim after he and Lucy had been injected with an unknown substance that rendered them defenseless. The season ended with the pair losing consciousness as bags were placed over their heads, hinting that season 9 will begin with the LAPD racing to find Tim and Lucy.
So how long might we have to wait to find out what happens to the pair?
The Rookie season 9 is not likely to arrive until January 2027
Fans have a long wait ahead of them for The Rookie season 9. While the good news is that another season is happening, the bad news is that fans will likely have another long break ahead this season.
While The Rookie began its run airing as part of ABC's fall lineup, that changed in season 6 when the show moved to midseason. Since being moved to ABC's midseason schedule, The Rookie has debuted at the beginning of the new year rather than returning in September or October as part of the network's fall lineup.
Season 6 was impacted by the writers' and actors' strikes, resulting in the season premiering in late February. Once things returned to normal pacing, ABC began debuting new seasons of The Rookie in the first week of January.
Should ABC keep this approach to its midseason schedule, it seems highly likely that The Rookie season 9 will premiere the week of January 4, 2027. If the show remains a Monday night series, we could see the season open on January 4, 2027 exactly, but there is always a chance that ABC could move the show to another night which could alter the exact return date.
Regardless of the exact date for the premiere, The Rookie season 9 is not expected to arrive until 2027, so we've got a long break ahead to ponder Lucy and Tim's fates!
