Each episode has seen a firefighter MIA recently. Ritter was the one missing from Chicago Fire season 13, episode 13.

Don’t worry too much about characters not in episodes now and then. This is happening strategically, and it doesn’t mean that firefighters are going to leave the firehouse. It’s all to do with production needs rather than storytelling.

Novak gave the Ritter update in Chicago Fire season 13, episode 13

We got the update about Ritter toward the end of the episode. Novak shared that Ritter was away on a mountain getaway.

This is likely added in for Ritter to get over his latest breakup. Dwight wanted more from Ritter than Ritter wanted in the relationship. It led to a breakup outside the restaurant. As much as we would have loved to see Ritter and Dwight go the full way to marriage, it’s clear that Ritter isn’t interested in this right now. He likes the peace he gets behind at home alone. To be honest, I can’t blame him!

However, he needs time to get over the breakup. That means a getaway, where he can shut the world off and figure out what he wants in life.

Why wasn’t Daniel Kyri in the episode of Chicago Fire?

While we got the storyline for Ritter, what’s the deal behind the scenes? Why wasn’t Daniel Kyri in the episode?

This is all linked to changes in production. For the last couple of years, the entire One Chicago lineup has had characters missing from episodes now and then. Chicago Fire has the biggest cast, so it’s not surprising to find out that we’re getting a character missing each episode. This is a way to cut production costs to keep the show on the air.

Over the last few episodes, Kidd, Severide, Cruz, and Mouch have been MIA. This just happens to be Ritter’s turn. Kyri isn’t leaving the show. At least, not right now! We can’t tell the future to know what’s to come in the next few months, but there are no signs of us losing Kyri just yet.

Ritter should be back in the next episode, and then we’ll likely see another character MIA for a night.

Chicago Fire airs on Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
