Ever since Mark Harmon’s return to the NCIS universe onscreen, a big mystery has been afoot, besides what happened to Lala Dominguez. Currently, fans are wondering who is after Gibbs and who the second target is, who is in danger. What do we know about why Gibbs was being hunted and who he needs to find and protect?
One of the most important points made about the current situation is that Gibbs said in the first episode in a narration that this all started because of the case involving Randy’s abduction. He was taken in an effort to steal classified information that would have been sold to the Russians in a revenge plot from the former interim director.
Gibbs said that “saving Randy came at a price.” So if this is true, is Randy the actual target that is also in danger? Now that we know that Lala is likely dead in the present, this means that the target could most likely be Randy himself. After all, his abduction and subsequent rescue is apparently the reason for all of.
But why now, why would this come up after over 30 years? It could be that the investigation led to trouble for their CI who worked at a Blockbuster video store. He is the reason Gibbs and the team even had a possible suspect and location to save Randy.
Could his involvement have caused something to happen to him, and if so, is someone looking for their own revenge? The CI had a young son at the time of the case, so if something happened to him because of it, it makes sense that this could be why it took so long for Gibbs and one of his friends to be in danger.
This is just a theory I had, especially when thinking about this case in particular. Have we already met the players connected to the reason for the shooting, or is there something else at play we don’t know about yet? Plus, is Randy even the target? With both Mike Franks and Lala (possibly) deceased, there are not many people who would be in danger.
However, even Cliff Wheeler could be a possible target since he was the reason the former interim director got fired. This is what makes the danger so real: we just don’t know for certain what the shooters' reasoning is and who they want dead.
Right now, Gibbs and Ellie Bishop are looking for one of the shooters who is connected to the CIA. Finding him could lead to answers about who the target is and what they are after.
Unfortunately, we will have to wait until Tuesday, Nov. 10, to find out some answers that will lead us closer to who is after Gibbs and who the other target is. But for now, all we can do is theorize who the mystery target is and whether or not the perpetrator is known or a new face that hasn't been seen.
