It should come as no surprise that Best Medicine was renewed for a second season. The medical dramedy has done well and has become a hit for Fox. One of the reasons may be the character on the other end of the love triangle.
The show centers on the romance of Doc Martin and Louisa for much of the series. Doc and Louisa are a key reason for the show's success but we need to give credit to, Louisa's ex-fiancé, the sheriff of the town, Mark Mylow, played by Josh Segarra, who has become a lovable and enjoyable part of the series.
The writers and Segarra's portrayal could have made the ex-romantic partner of Louisa and Doc Martin's rival more egotistically or rudely. However, they chose to make him a character with depth and humor. They also have given him vulnerability in tender moments of the first season.
Too many times, on other series, the "ex" is made to see him arrogant and just not a good person. The Office and Roy are a prime example. But with Best Medicine, Mark is arguably even more likable than the series lead of Doc Martin.
This may have added to the show's dynamic and made the series as a whole seem more realistic. Of course, fans are rooting for Doc Martin and Louisa to finally start dating. But fans will also want Mark to find happiness.
That does not mean that fans want Mark and Louisa to get back together, and at this point it would seem more of a gimmick. It does mean that Mark deserves to find someone who appreciates him and his traits and will give fans even more of a character they hope will find love.
The fact that the actor and writers gave the character more kindness also gives them a chance to have a fun dynamic with their lead. Josh Charles (Doc Martin) and Segarra have great chemistry, and as the series continues, seeing their friendship grow will be rewarding for viewers.
It also adds more stories for Mark to figure out how he feels once the leads officially start dating. It would not be surprising for them to introduce the lovable sheriff's love interest at the end of this season or for next season.
With only a few more episodes of the first season, each one will be met with anticipation. For Mark, his character growth and being close with the main character will be something to watch as the season winds down.
