Beau Bridges will return for season 3 of Matlock.
The actor recently confirmed his return in an interview with TV Insider, telling the outlet, "I’m going to work on Matlock in December. They just started just now, so the timing worked out for me to be able to do R.J. as well.”
“Matlock is great,” Bridges continued. “I have so much fun on that one, and what a gift to be able to do a show here in L.A. where I live. That’s fantastic. And Kathy Bates is an old buddy of mine, and working with her is fun. Yeah, it’s good.”

Matty and Olympia spent most of season 2 trying to find concrete evidence to take Senior down. They had a few bumps along the way, but thankfully, Julian secured a recording of his father confessing to his crimes. As a result, the last time we saw Senior, the FBI arrested him on federal charges.
Senior will likely be in prison at the start of season 3 or out on bail while awaiting trial. It all comes down to how good his representation is and how the evidence holds up. That being said, we also wouldn't put it past Senior to have a few tricks or contingencies up his sleeve. Matty, Olympia, and Julian made a pretty damning case against him, but Senior is not the type of character to go down easily.
Either way, Matlock fans will have to wait to see the fallout of season 2's finale, because the show doesn't return until 2027.
While the move to midseason surprised many fans, showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman told TV Insider that she orchestrated the show's move to midseason.
“I asked for it with the network. We had a talk,” Urman shared. “I just feel like we had so much stuff to think about because we really landed the plane on this and we really thought that was important because we didn’t want to keep dragging out the same story and the characters have to get to someplace real emotionally. So we really, when we took this two-hour finale and really paid a lot of things off, what came with that was I’m going to need time after that to really build the architecture so that we have it for the next seasons. I’m excited about it, but I am also grateful because we needed a little bit of time.”
Urman also acknowledged that some fans will be disappointed by the wait but said the extra time will give the show's writers time to craft a high-quality storyline for season 3.
Matlock is available to stream on Paramount+.
