Will Trent’s biggest victim is finally speaking up about the shocking character death!
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Will Trent Season 4 Episode 15
Will Trent fans are reeling from the show’s most shocking death ever. Season 4 has seen Will (Ramon Rodriguez) tangling with Adelaide (Mallory Jansen), the twisted psychopath playing a strange game of cat and mouse. That had Will’s longtime mentor, Amanda (Sonja Sohn), running her own private investigation into the chase.
The April 14 episode saw Will meeting Adelaide at a bar for a confrontation that almost led to a kiss. But when he followed her out, Will found Amanda having been stabbed to death while hunting a serial killer cult.
After fans were stunned by this unexpected departure, Sohn herself finally responded with a pair of Instagram videos over the weekend. Shot, as usual, by her pool, the first video had her expressing her surprise at the support from the fans, letting her know how Amanda’s death affected them.
“I have been so touched, just so taken with the response to Amanda’s passing, just some of the long paragraphs that you all have been commenting. Those of you who can really feel what I put into the character, what I put into the work. And I just learned I have long-term fans who have been sort of following what I’ve been doing, what I’ve been trying to do with the work. And that was surprising and really, really satisfying because that’s really why I do it.”
It’s not hard to imagine this being as unexpected to Sohn as it was to the fans of the show. Amanda had been a vital part of the series as a sort of foster mother to Will and the tough boss for the rest of the team. She even got a nice spotlight in a recent two-part episode where she realized too late her new lover was using her to cover up a murder.
While the producers defended killing off Amanda as a needed part of the storyline, fans were still upset. In her second video, Sohn went more in-depth into her feelings and how she accepted her time on the show was done.
“Once you get the pink slip, it’s just a job. I got a job like you got a job. It’s just a job. Actors are really low people on the totem pole when it comes down to the big structure. When you get a pink slip, you don’t ask about it. You just say goodbye.”
Sohn hinted there would be more talk on this in the future, citing how she was once almost written off HBO’s acclaimed crime drama The Wire and what it’s like for actors to say goodbye to characters "whether we want them to or not.”
“[I get to talk about] the ins and outs of that and what comes with the business and all that. It’s not always time to talk about the details because one of the things I was taught through this experience of being Amanda and of being in this situation is she’s a much more thoughtful, reserved character than I am. When I engage with characters, we give each other aspects of ourselves.”
There is a chance Amanda could pop up on the show in either flashbacks or one of the odd dream sequences the series has now and then. But many fans will agree with Sohn’s final toast.
“The best years are here to come. Here’s to Will Trent. Here’s to Amanda. My god. What a character. What an honor and a privilege. So just hold tight. We’re gonna be alright. There’s plenty of Sonja Sohn coming up.”
That will hopefully soothe some of the anger fans have, as Sohn still loves the role, and that hopefully leaves the door open for her return to Will Trent as the show moves on without Amanda.
Will Trent airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on ABC.
