Yet another season of Will Trent has come to an end, but fear not! While season 4 is over, this is not the end of the road for ABC’s hit drama!
A fifth season has been ordered by ABC, which was honestly no surprise at all. In its fourth season, Will Trent has remained a strong performer for ABC, and more fans keep falling in love with the show every season. Season 4 was definitely one for the books, and the final episodes of the season brought about a major change to the show’s ensemble with the exit of Sonja Sohn after her character, GBI Chief Amanda Wagner, was killed off the show in shocking fashion.
Amanda’s murder altered the trajectory of the final episodes of season 4, and the writers have already hinted that the show looked to use the moment to reset the show. Fans have been promised an exciting new chapter in season 5, but we’re going to likely be waiting until 2027 for Will Trent to return.
Here’s when Will Trent season 5 will likely premiere on ABC
Since its first season, Will Trent has been a staple on ABC’s midseason schedule with each new season arriving at the top of the new year rather than in the fall. It’s expected that ABC will continue this trend with season 5, meaning that new episodes of Will Trent will not return until 2027.
Aside from its second season which was impacted by the writers’ and actors’ union strikes, every season of Will Trent has kicked off the first week of January. This is because ABC tends to debut its midseason programming slate at the top of the new year after the New Year’s Day holiday. Given that every season of Will Trent, again aside from season 2, has arrived the first week of January and been part of ABC’s Tuesday night lineup, this means we should see Will Trent season 5 premiere on Tuesday, January 5, 2027.
Of course, we’ll have to wait for ABC to officially confirm this return date, but the network has been consistent with its release strategy for Will Trent, and we don’t see them changing that up.
With Will Trent remaining on the midseason slate, that will mean fans will again in store for a hiatus of six months, which is always the hardest part of Will Trent being a midseason staple.
The nice thing is that while Will Trent has become a staple of ABC’s midseason lineup, its episode orders have not been impacted by this with ABC consistently delivering 18-episode seasons of the show. This is expected to continue with season 5, which is expected to consist of 18 episodes which means that we should see the season play out from January to May 2027.
