Kara Thrace – Battlestar Galactica

Last Words: “I’ll see you on the other side (…) Just let me go.” / “And now that you’re here…”

How She Died: During a Cylon attack, her viper is struck by debris and explodes.

Why Her Last Words Were So Great: Kara Thrace has the strange distinction of having not one but two last words. These are the last words of her character as she most definitely dies. We later come across her charred skeleton inside the viper we saw explode. Except that she comes back! There’s a ton of mystery surrounding what she was in that final season, but in the finale (seriously what the frak was she?!), she confirms that she’s completed what she is supposed to do. While Lee is going on about all the things he wants to do she disappears.

The significance of both her last lines is that she’s speaking to Lee and they correlate to their relationship. Ronald D. Moore has described the Lee/Kara dynamic as suspended in one place. They’re undeniably attracted to each other but there’s toxicity and volatility that makes them essentially negate each other out. They can never grow beyond that point for a whole host of factors that are explored throughout the series. This is why when they’re finally at a place where it would make sense to see them take on the new world together, the moment has passed. Lee has a whole life ahead of him and Kara disappears without a word, their destiny resides in a different world that no longer exists. But it’s Lee’s promise never to forget her that makes their final moments together that makes us hear nothing but the rain (and by rain I mean my tears).
