‘Shadowhunters’ Season 2, Episode 5 Recap: ‘Dust And Shadows’

Mysterious Rescues & Emotional Goodbyes

Alec finds Dr. Rouse and demands to know where Clary is, but she sends him flying in the air and crashes him back down into the floor. At the same time, Jace and Izzy arrive at the house. Madzie comes to Alec’s rescue, telling her to stop hurting the man. Dr. Rouse tells her that they were just playing, but Izzy steps in with her whip. Using Madzie as a shield from Izzy’s whip, Dr. Rouse portals them out of the house, saying that Clary can be found, but she still will need to return the promised favor.

Clary is using chains in the basement to fight off the demon that’s trying to impregnate her (it feels so wrong to type that). The demon pauses and a rune appears in the air. Clary takes her stele and draws the rune onto her palm. She pushes her hand forward toward the demon and light shoots out of her palm, causing the demon to disintegrate. Jace runs into the basement just as the demon is burning away, and has no idea what she just did. She explains that she had a vision of a rune and it allowed her to shoot sunlight out of her hand. Jace tells her to keep the rune a secret, and when Alec and Izzy appear moments later, Clary pretends as though nothing had happened.

Simon’s mother calls a doctor, saying that it’s a medical emergency. She walks in on him eating a live rat with his fangs out, and he’s mortified.

At the Institute, Izzy applies more of the cream, which is giving her an addicting high. Does anyone else think that Aldertree is turning her into an addict on purpose? What is his problem?!

At the funeral in the Institute, everyone is wearing all white, which we guess is the color of mourning when you’re daily uniform is all black. Jace and Alec walk together in solidarity, and Aldertree approaches Izzy, saying that she looks more healed. Izzy wants to know where Luke and Simon are, but Aldertree says the Clave still won’t allow them inside. Clary enters the chapel and Jace offers her his hand, telling her not to let go. Clary is supposed to announce her mother’s name, but she’s unable to speak the words and falls into Jace, who recites the name Jocelyn Fairchild for her. Alec is also in tears, and Clary walks over to him, sobbing. The Silent Brothers move their stele over each corpse, and they use a rune to send the fallen Shadowhunters’ souls up out of their bodies.

In the final scene, we see Luke in the woods under the moon, covered in blood. His bones snap in his arm as he starts to transform into a werewolf…
