#2. It’s Not Afraid to Take Risks

One this is for certain, Supernatural writers and showrunners take risks. We just have to look at the earlier seasons to confirm that.

In the premiere of Season 2, it looked like Dean Winchester was going to die. To stop that, John sacrificed his life to save his son. While not seemingly a big risk at first, the whole storyline focused on two brothers searching for their father. Where were they going to go now?

Season 3 did end up killing off one of the main characters and then Supernatural introduced angels that weren’t quite the harp-playing, soft-spoken creatures that had been noted in past TV shows. There were more elements of the bible introduced and the show wasn’t afraid to kill off some fan favorites.

Even now, the show isn’t afraid to take risks. After making it clear that God had left the building, a fan-favorite turned out to be his vessel! Season 11 saw Mary Winchester being brought back from the dead. While that would usually be a “jump the shark” moment, it created a whole new dynamic to the show.
