Although she began her career as an architect, there was always something pulling Megan Padalecki towards writing. In school, she said she loved art and literature which is a perfect combination for a writer. Now, as a published author of two books, Padalecki reflects on their meaning, her life, how she self-publishes, and whats to come.

It’s hard to describe what it feels like speaking to Megan Padalecki. At first you have hundreds of questions swirling in your head, but as you begin to learn about her you feel like you have become a part of her life and her latest friend. It’s the same feeling you get when you read her books.

That comfortable feeling of ease and wanting to share all your secrets with someone who won’t judge you, but understands the importance of always learning.

Padalecki has published two books. Big Mo follows the sensational journey of a pet iguana as he grows too large for his home and threatens his natural environment — while her latest book Little Moon follows the odyssey of this tiny creature as she searches for a sense of belonging in a seemingly endless sea. While on the surface both are great for kids, they are multi-layered offering everything from environmental awareness, how to deal with being different, and the simple things in life.

Both books have these moments of light that occur in the book that finally bring them back to their “happy” place. Padalecki said she is still looking for what inspires her light saying, “Yeah I actually hadn’t even really made that connection myself you’re probably right. I think that it kind of like the climax of the stories are that the idea of light.

“For Big Mo, the lamp at the end, I just I thought of it cool trick to play,” said Padalecki. “You often forget the little things you need to be happy. As an iguana all he needs is to be fed and heat. A simple life. It’s a symbol that translates into something much bigger when you think about it.

For Little Moon, the light was more physical almost like this god-like figure. It becomes a guiding figure which is so important and when the light is found you are at home.”

Megan said its hard for her to decide what her light is right now that is pushing her determination to write and offer kids something educational about the environment while telling a great story. What Megan doesn’t know is she is the light that connects both of the books she wrote. Her spirit, her tenacity, and attention to detail make her one of the best writers out there.

Megan said she gets inspiration from her family. “My two brothers have kids. So I am able to bring the books over to them and see what the family says and how they review the books,” said Megan. Although Jared Padalecki (who plays Sam Winchester on Supernatural) might be considered famous; to her, it’s just her brother. She loves taking advice from both brothers and her entire family. Her skills are what made “Megan Padalecki” a household name for many families.

Although she could have went with a publisher, Padalecki decided to self-publish. “I think there is a lot that goes into it for me. I think the main difference between using a publisher and self-publishing is control. I noticed right away with what I do now, self publishing allows for you to get all the control back which I had been lacking in my job,” said Padalecki.

“Sometimes I would be working on an architecture project for years and there were dozens of people involved. There were also steps to get things approved. I would have to go through the same thing if I were writing a book traditionally. So having the freedom is nice.”

However, she did offer advice for up and coming writers. “Well first I want to say thank you to anyone that has ever picked up one of my books. Secondly, I would tell writers to never give up. You have an idea write it, pursue it, and don’t give up on your dreams. Do your research when it comes to self publishing and be prepared. It’s a lot of work, but it’s so worth it. Also, always feel free to send me a message. It might take me awhile to get back to you, but I always answer everyone. I am more than willing to share my journey.”
