In Season 2, Episode 13 of Freeform’s ‘Shadowhunters’, a new, unexpected ship was born, and the fandom reacted accordingly.

In Season 2, Episode 13 of Shadowhunters, “Those of Demon Blood,” an unexpected and shocking ship was born… or was it? Many think that Jace and Maia’s alley hook-up was more about getting frustration out over their feelings for Clary and Simon respectively, but others have been waiting for Jace and Maia to “kiss and make up” ever since they first met back in Season 2, Episode 3. They’ve only known each other for 10 episodes, but Jace and Maia have had a very unique and complicated evolution.

So was the kiss completely shocking? Was it inevitable?

You might not agree with us on this, but there are other thematic reasons as to why the Shadowhunters writers may have had Jace and Maia hook-up, namely because Clary, Alec and Izzy were/are also in Downworlder relationships, and seeing as how the episode focused on Shadowhunter-Downworlder tensions, it did make sense to have Jace and Maia kiss to finish out the episode’s arc. Should we have seen this coming?

The evolution of Jace and Maia on ‘Shadowhunters’

Throughout Season 2, the tension between Jace Wayland/Lightwood/Herondale and Maia Roberts has been complicated. When they first met at the beginning of Season 2, Maia allowed Jace to use the phone at Hunter’s Moon (and even treated him to a beer) when he arrived after washing up on the beach, but things quickly turned sour.
