‘Supernatural’ SDCC 2017 made one thing clear: long-dead characters are returning

Fans were excited to hear that characters that were previously dead could come back to Supernatural. This won’t be a case of ghosts in the real world, but a chance to see the characters in the alternate world. There is also a chance for non-dead characters to return.

More from Hidden Remote

So far, we know that Missouri Moseley is definitely coming back, likely in the Wayward Sisters backdoor pilot. We also know that Bobby could return again, as he appeared in the Season 12 finale in the alternate world. But who else could make an appearance in Season 13? There are just so many characters to choose from, especially when it comes to funny angels and strong hunters.

Here’s a look at nine dead characters we want to see back. Since we know Bobby can return, he’s not made the list but yes, we do want to see him back! We’re also skipping John Winchester. He’s already been confirmed dead in the apocalyptic world (that’s why the Winchester brothers weren’t born) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is currently working on The Walking Dead so is unlikely to have the time to return to the show.

#9 Jo Harvelle

Jo received mixed reviews from fans. Introduced in Supernatural Season 2, she made it clear that she was a strong woman who just wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps. That led to some dangerous choices and she realized it wasn’t the fairy tale she once envisioned. After she took up hunting properly, she matured into a smart, independent woman.

Unfortunately for Jo, she was young and showed an interest in Dean. Many female fans instantly hated her just for that reason alone (yet there are others who loved her and Dean together). There was also a bratty nature to her at first, which wouldn’t have helped. She just needed to mature and see hunting from the hunter’s side. That would have come with time.

She only appeared in a handful of episodes, but certainly left her mark with her sacrifice in Season 5 and her return as a ghost in Season 7.

The alternate world does open the chance for Jo to return. There are chances that her and her mom are hunters somewhere, since they would never have had to sacrifice their lives for the Winchesters. The question is whether Jo will return.

#8 Balthazar

Another angel and one who died, but not through sacrificing himself to save the Winchesters. He was actually betraying the Winchesters and Castiel decided to kill him for it. Fans were divided over whether they wanted the selfish angel gone or not, but that may have been because it was the wonderful Sebastian Roche in the role.

From his original appearance in Season 6, Balthazar became an angel that you loved to hate at times. He was cocky, just wanted to have fun, and didn’t care about the Winchesters at all.  His self-serving nature did mean that he hid powerful artefacts from angels who may have used them for the wrong reasons, so there is a little bit of selflessness there.

The apocalypse does given the writers a chance to bring him back. Angels are clearly around, since Bobby made a point of saying he killed all of them. However, he is good at hiding and faking his death. He may be hiding powerful artefacts in this other world still, since there are no Winchesters to sabotage and betray.

#7 Bela Talbot

This is likely a controversial choice. She wasn’t the most liked character, but that may have been due to the shorter third season. For those who don’t know, Season 3 took place during the year of the writer’s strike. Instead of the usual 22 episodes that it was supposed to get, it only got to air 16. Scripts and storylines had to be quickly changed when the writers came off their strike.

Bela’s character was affected by it. There was clearly a larger storyline involving her deal with the crossroads demon and her attempt to save herself from hell.

We haven’t seen her as a demon yet. Surely if she did become a demon, she would purposely look out for Dean and Sam, since they refused to bring the colt back to her. After all, she needed the colt to give to Lillith to break her deal. Not seeing her as a demon suggests that she is still somewhere in hell.

The apocalyptic world does open the story of her managing to break out of the deal. Without the Winchesters, she may have eventually got her hands on the colt to give to Lillith. Of course, she could also be a demon in this world.

#6 Kevin Tran

Who wouldn’t want to see Kevin Tran return? He was an annoying, snivelling, high-school kid at first, but he grew into a mature adult. Of course, that was only because he was thrown into the world of the supernatural because he was a prophet of the Lord.

The overachieving Princeton hopeful was introduced in Season 7. He was just a normal kid, before he became a prophet and was instantly on all angels’ radars. Whether the angels actually wanted to help him or not isn’t completely clear. It’s never clear just whose side they are all on, but Dean didn’t just them and made sure Kevin was kept safe.

Throughout the next two seasons, he became a close friend to the Winchesters. He was like a son to them in some ways and a younger brother in others. When Sam killed Kevin while possessed as Gadreel, Dean was heartbroken and instantly blamed himself.

Kevin has returned since his death. He is now a ghost in his mother’s home, helping her to feel some sort of happiness now that he’s gone. There is always a risk that he could turn vengeful, like Bobby did, but it doesn’t seem like anyone is really worried about that happening. However, this could be a storyline focused on in Season 13. Alternatively, he could be a prophet in the apocalyptic world.

#5 Gabriel

There is one thing that comes from having an apocalyptic world: the chance to see Gabriel back.

Gabriel goes by a few names: The Trickster, Loki, and the Pizza Man…But it was arguably the Winchesters that got him killed. After initially coming up against them in Season 2 as The Trickster, Gabriel found himself drawn into a few dramas. It likely didn’t help that he taunted Sam by putting him through the same Tuesday more than 100 times.

In Season 5 he sacrificed his life to try to prevent Lucifer from starting the apocalypse. His death gave the Winchesters a chance to escape the hotel they’d been trapped in.

Richard Speight Jr. is still part of the SPN Family. He and Rob Benedict do a number of projects together, he’s moderated SDCC panels, and directed a few Supernatural episodes. That suggests he would be open to return as his character. Can we see him in the apocalyptic world, please?

#4 Rufus Turner

It took a while to warm to Rufus. When he was first introduced in Season 3, he was a sour, foul-mouthed hunter who had nothing good to say about the world. Bobby even warned Dean about him, making it clear that Rufus would only help if Dean took a certain scotch.

Whether it was lack of continuity or just a slight shift in Rufus’ personality, he turned up later with cases for Bobby and the brothers. He regularly turned to Bobby for help (and vice versa). Working with the Winchesters would prove to be fatal for him, just as it is for many other hunters who end up working with them. After being infected with a Kahn Worm, Bobby stabbed him to prevent him from turning into a monster. Later the Winchesters found a way to disinfect a body from the worm in order to save Cole Trenton. If only they’d found that way when it came to Rufus.

Death doesn’t stop someone returning, and that’s certainly the case for Rufus. Supernatural has seen him return numerous time, most recently in Season 11 when fans got flashbacks of Rufus and Bobby working a case that the Winchesters would later pick up.

He was mentioned in the alternate world, and it appears that he is still alive there. This could mean he returns to the show and we get to see what the apocalypse did to him.

There are also theories that a new character confirmed for Wayward Sisters is somehow related to him. New girl Patience Turner is suspected of being his daughter or possibly granddaughter due to the same surname.

#3 Ash

Ash was one of the best things about Supernatural Season 2. The mullet-loving genius always helped the Winchesters when they were in need. He was willing to use his skills for good, although you wouldn’t want to know everything else he got up to.

Our first introduction to Ash was him waking up on the pool table at the Roadhouse. He didn’t disappoint from that point onward. His humor, his look on life, and his smarts were all appreciated by the fans.

Ash unfortunately left Supernatural at the end of Season 2. He was in the Roadhouse when it exploded. Fans did debate whether he was really dead, since his watch switched hands, but his death was confirmed in Season 5. When the Winchesters ended up in heaven, the met him and he showed them how to jump through the different heavens. We assumed after the Winchesters left that he was going to look for Ellen and Jo.

Out of all the characters, Ash would be perfect for the apocalyptic world. It would be easy to picture him helping Bobby out somewhere.

#2 Ellen Harvelle

Really, Ellen, Jo, and Ash could come back all together as a trio, but Ellen is the most important one of the three. She was like a surrogate mother to the Winchesters and was willing to risk her life to make sure those she loved remained safe.

We first met Ellen in Season 2, Episode 2. The Winchesters were grieving over the loss of their father and came across the Harvelles when they got a message from Ellen on John’s voicemail. They just had to check it out, and Ellen instantly made it very clear that she was not a woman to mess with. As a widow of a hunter and the owner of a hunter-popular bar, she had to be strong and sassy.

Unfortunately, Ellen died in Season 5. She sacrificed her life to make sure the Winchesters could kill the devil. It was a heartbreaking moment, but she did return for an episode in Season 6 when the Titanic was saved from sinking. She hasn’t been seen since and barely mentioned on the show, but we need her back. We need to see what she would have been like in an apocalyptic future.

#1 Charlie Bradbury

Since Bobby isn’t on the list, the number one choice has to be Charlie. Supernatural lost something when they said goodbye to her. She was the heart that held everyone together and proved that young women could be successful on the show. Charlie was also a support character for LGBT fans, since she made it very clean in her first episode that she was a lesbian.

Charlie met a gruesome and unfair end. She was killed by the Steins in Season 10, and fans still haven’t forgiven Jeremy Carver for his actions. Not only did he kill off a fan-favorite, but her death wasn’t even shown onscreen. We just got the aftermath and the burning of her body in a hunter’s funeral.

The death served one purpose: to continue driving a wedge between the Winchester brothers. There was no other need to take her out of the show.

With the alternate world, there is a chance Charlie could return. We could get a chance to see the brave, strong, and kickass woman we grew to know and love since her first appearance in Season 7.
