Supernatural executive producer Robert Singer talks the Rift World, Scooby-Doo crossover, spinoff plans and more!
To say that the twelfth season of Supernatural left us with more questions than answers might be an understatement. Castiel was killed before our eyes. Mary and Lucifer were trapped in the Rift World. Crowley was murdered leaving the fate of Hell in limbo. And Lucifer’s son Jack was born and discovered as a full-grown young man when Sam entered the house where his mother passed during childbirth. So where exactly do we go from here?
"“I think where we left last season, there was a lot of balls in the air and a lot of loose threads. This season is really about is, from the boys’ point of view, can they get mom back? Is mom alive? They have to deal with Lucifer’s son Jack. Is he going to be Lucifer incarnate or is he going to be [good] since his mother was a nice woman. There’s a whole nurture versus nature component to that,” Carver began. “As far as the boys are concerned. Dean is pretty much convinced when the season starts that mom is gone. He’s been left. He feels bad about it, but he’s convinced that she’s gone,” he continued. “Sam, on the other hand, says, ‘This kid opened the rift once, he can do it again. Maybe mom’s alive and we can go rescue her.’ They butt heads over that. This season is really about how do you mend the rifts?”"

With the Rift World weighing heavily on the minds of the Winchesters this season, it seems logical for fans to presume we’ll be seeing it quite often this season. However, as Singer teases, most of the time spent in the world will be via cut-aways but that doesn’t mean it won’t be playing a major role in the season.
"“We basically do more cut-aways to the Rift World and what’s going on there. We don’t want to let Sam and Dean in there too quick because then we run out of story,” Singer admitted. “Mostly we’re in the real world, but there’s a lot of other entities that are trying to get into the Rift World for all sorts of reason. While most of it is done here in this world, [the Rift World] is always there. It’s about people trying to get in there or trying to get out. When we go to the Rift World, it’s really about, ‘How to we get out of here?’ There’s one character that we’re bringing back in a really interesting way that is going to try to help open the Rift to their world.”"

While the season will be full of dramatic moments, fans can look forward to more lighter moments down the line including the highly anticipated Scooby-Doo crossover episode – which Singer revealed will be coming our way early next year.
"“Andrew [Dabb] knew some guys over at Warner Bros. Animation and they floated this idea. We took it to Warner Bros. and asked, ‘What do you think?’ and everybody got really excited about it. They guys have already recorded their parts and, I think, the Scooby Doo people have already recorded their parts. It’s one of our bigger swings. I would say three-quarters of that episode is animation. I’ve seen the tests of Sam and Dean working with Scooby, it’s pretty fantastic. We’re really excited about it. I’m pretty confident people are going to like it. It’s a long process. We started working on this last January and we won’t get the final animation until this coming January. We’ve been talking it for years and we’ve finally able to pull it off.”"
Also on tap for later this season? The backdoor pilot for the show’s spinoff Wayward Sisters which will incorporate both new and familiar faces, while shaking up the Supernatural format by keeping things set in one location.
"“The spinoff is Sheriff Jodie Mills and her two orphan girls. We’re adding a third character who is a tad younger than the other two girls and who is the granddaughter of Missouri Moseley, who are super fans will recognize as our psychic from Year One, and she will have psychic abilities as well,” Singer revealed. “It’s not a road show as Supernatural is. It will be more in one place, dealing with a Hellmouth. We’ve been talking about a spinoff for years and we thought Jodie is a really beloved character and that would be a good way to go. It’s a very female empowering show."
