Why are the houseguests constantly yelling in the diary room?

Here’s a thing we can’t stop noticing: Why are people yelling in the diary room?

Yes, people yell on Big Brother and Big Brother 19 is no different. There are plenty of fights and confrontations and it’s only human to raise your voice during such events. However, where it makes zero sense to raise your voice is in a confessional, where you’re speaking to a camera (and presumably two people, a producer and a cameraman, on the other side) about your thoughts. Sure, maybe, you get worked up explaining a particularly heated opinion, but constantly shout-speaking? What is up with that?

On BB19, Josh does it regularly, but Josh is insane, so you might be excused for thinking that’s just the way he lives his life. But Paul does it too. So does Mark, who has neither the need or personality to. Alex speaks with the cadence of yelling, but at a normal volume. It’s weird. And yet, Cody speaks almost preternaturally calmly — at least in the most recent episode.

This is not the first time Big Brother fans have noticed and or wondered about certain houseguests tendency to yell in the Diary Room. However, in season 17, Bustle came to the conclusion it had to do with John’s YouTube rock video days. That could hardly explain the behavior this season.

The true reason, uncovered back in 2014, is very simple and not particularly exciting: The producers tell them to yell. Specifically, they tell them to bring energy, which apparently to a lot of the houseguests equates to yelling.

Next: Death Row Cody is a delight

I think, what it comes down to, is a lot of these HGs not knowing how to modulate their voices. Take Christmas. She speaks in a normal tone, and then she raises it to really emphasis a point. That’s good. Josh — Josh just shout-speaks. The whole time. It’s not great.
