iZombie executive producer Diane Ruggiero offers up new details about the show’s looming reset, teases new dynamics for the show and more!

More from Hidden Remote

After three seasons of hiding the truth about zombies from most of the world, the cat was let out of the bag in the iZombie Season 3 finale setting up for the show’s biggest creative reset yet. Now that the world knows about zombies, the lives of both the undead and human residents of Seattle will be forever changed as the city becomes shut off from the rest of the outside world. In addition to the new wall around the city, zombies no longer have to hide who which will alter the dynamics of both the characters and the show itself.

This July, Hidden Remote has the chance to catch up with executive producer Diane Ruggiero in a roundtable style interview where we had the chance to learn more about what’s ahead in Season 4, how the show’s reset will alter the dynamic of the show, show some love for the show’s amazing side characters and more!

Q. Now that the truth about zombies is out there, where do we go from here?

Diane Ruggiero: We open the season three months later. The end of last season, people find out about zombies and a bunch of people who lived in Seattle were like, “Shit, there’s zombies. We need to get out.” So a bunch of people left. The people that stayed got stuck because the U.S. government built a wall around Seattle. Now you have people living with zombies that don’t necessarily want to be living with zombies.

What’s interesting to me is now you have people outside of the wall who might be ill and might be dying who are like, “Oh my god, the salvation for me is behind that wall and I can’t get in.” Then you have the people who are like, “Oh my god, I’m going to die unless I get out of here and I can’t get out.”

In the beginning, it was just Liv trying to get through the day without outing herself as a zombie and fighting off Blaine and whatever evil doings he was up to. Now it’s huge. Now it’s there’s so much more at play and Liv’s also going to be a key player in this as is the rest of the cast.

There’s a lot higher stakes, but we’ll still have our brains of the week and they’ll still be solving murder cases.

Q. Do you feel like the big reveal and looming reset was part of the natural progression of the show?

Ruggiero: I think whenever you have a show where there’s a secret identity or big secret, there’s only so long you can keep it a secret before people call bullshit. We had to let Clive know because it was getting ridiculous and then once so many people [you get to the point where you’re like], “That many people know and not everybody knows?” You’re going to have to get to it and put it out there. It’s challenging and kind of scary, but I think it’s more exciting television and makes for better storytelling.

Q. Now that you’ve cracked the door wide open and the truth about zombies is out, are you excited to be able to explore new dynamics with the characters – particularly with Liv?

Ruggiero: The exciting thing for me is a new dynamic of rebellion for Liv. Now she’s not hiding. People know who she is and she’s sort of out and proud. She’s always had a heroic side to her and now having a heroic/rebellious side is going to be a fun thing to see.

Q. The show also has many wonderful secondary characters, so might we continue to see more of them in Season 4?

Ruggiero: I will tell you that Jonny Frost is going to have a morning show called Frost Bite and I might be more excited about that than I am about rebellious hero Liv.

Q. And how about Chase Graves? Have we seen the last of him or can we expect more in Season 4?

Ruggiero: Chase Graves plays a big role in this season.
