Leslie Thompkins has found herself in an unenviable position as Queen of the Narrows as she searches for atonement on Gotham.

Leslie Thompkins has been through a lot on Gotham. Generally, she doesn’t get as much attention since she’s one of the supporting cast members but that could change soon for the new Queen of the Narrows.

That’s not a place Lee (short for Leslie) thought she would ever be. But losing a pregnancy, her husband being killed, and then getting infected with the Tetch Virus has sent her to the far reaches of her psyche to figure herself out. While under the virus, she helped unleash a deadly serum that infected many Gothamites, mostly in the Narrows. Now, she is on a path of atonement as she tries to make up for the harm she’s caused.

More from Hidden Remote

While she likely would have preferred not to operate in the dark, nothing stays hidden for long in Gotham City. She medically treats people for free in the Narrows while serving as the medical staff for the underground fight club. She is essentially punishing herself for the hurt she has caused hoping to help those she has caused the most problems.

It probably doesn’t hurt that she is also in a place that her ex Jim Gordon is likely not to show up anytime soon.

But don’t look at Lee as a savior for Narrows. She doesn’t want that role, no matter what she did Gotham’s last episode. The only reason she has been thrown into the fray is because she kind of has a death wish at this point, putting herself in harm’s way because she doesn’t care what happens.

She shot Firefly’s apparatus to keep her from filleting Barbara, Tabitha and Selina. Then exposed Cherry as working for Penguin, which got Cherry killed. The people of the Narrows then looked to the reluctant Lee to lead them.

So her first order as the Queen of the Narrows was to give everyone a free drink.

I actually like this version of Lee. Previously, she had a lot of the righteousness that Jim Gordon harbors. She pushed herself into situations and seemed to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Next: Jim Gordon finally becomes captain on Gotham, but at a price

However, this version of Lee has come down to Earth, showing her flaws, which makes her more human and likable. She’s filled with compassion and looked to help those whom she perceives that she harmed while fighting her own demons. Lee is in a living nightmare as she reflects on what the Tetch Virus has stolen from her.

While Gotham is filled with a huge cast, which can be hard to keep track of, now is the time to focus more on Lee and explore this side of her. She is learning things about herself that she didn’t know existed before, and so are the viewers.

All hail the Queen of the Narrows, even if her time there is short-lived.

Tune into Gotham on Fox on Thursday at 8/7c.
