2018 is almost here and Freeform is already ahead of the game. The network has a ton of new upcoming TV shows so get ready to set your DVR’s.

More from Hidden Remote

2018 is rapidly approaching and with it, comes a plethora of TV shows. Whether its returning shows or new shows, 2018 promises to be an even bigger year than 2017. One network is already ahead of the curve is Freeform. Formally known as the home of Pretty Little Liars, the network is introducing an entirely new group of shows and is poised to rule 2018 TV.

While we have to come to love Freeform, most of us remember the days of ABC Family. The network introduced some of the best and most-beloved teen shows. There was the controversial yet extremely popular The Secret Life of An American Teenager to Greek to 10 Things I Hate About You.

The network seems to be taking a page from their own book. They’re introducing a lot of different shows from comedies to sitcoms to dramas. A lot of the shows are based on original ideas but some are spinoffs or take inspiration from a property like Marvel. Even so, these shows look to be some of 2018’s best.

grown-ish

This is one of the most anticipated shows of 2018. A spinoff of black-ish, grown-ish follows Zoey, the oldest daughter of the Johnson’s. The show will follow her as she goes off to college and finds out being independent isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The series features Yara Shahidi reprising her role as Zoey and have guest appearances from her parents played by Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross.

Even though I’ve only seen a few episodes of black-ish, grown-ish looks incredibly funny and the perfect addition to Freeform’s lineup. If the previews are any indication, grown-ish is going to have a younger feel to it but keeps the same humor as black-ish.

This is just one of a handful of shows Freeform is rolling out in January but we’ll talk about those in a minute. If you’re interested in watching grown-ish, it premieres January 3rd on Freeform at 8/7c.

Cloak & Dagger

A lot of comedies are premiering in 2018 on Freeform so let’s talk about a drama. Even though Freeform dropped New Warriors, they will still be airing Cloak & Dagger. A Marvel property, the series will follow the duo of Cloak and Dagger after they inherit superpowers and become a power couple.

After losing New Warriors, the hype around Cloak & Dagger is especially high. If it’s successful, it could become the home of future Marvel properties. Another huge selling point for the show are the stars: Olivia Holt as Dagger and Aubrey Joseph as Cloak. No doubt an underrated duo, the series will hopefully introduce them to a new age of fans.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a concrete release date for Cloak & Dagger yet. It also has a 10-episode series order though so that’s good news. Using Freeform will be a great way for Marvel to dip their toe into series for their teenaged/younger fanbase.

Siren

Another drama show coming to Freeform in 2018 is Siren. Considering how popular mermaids have become, there’s no way this show won’t be popular. The show will also help fill the gap left by other dramas such as PLL and Switched at Birth.

Siren is inspired by the old siren legends and follows a girl who proves the legends are real and the outcome of her sharing it. It’s such a different type of show and brings some more fantasy to the network. Not much is known about the series yet, but it looks like it’s going to be dirty and grittier than some of their offerings.

It will premiere on Freeform on March 29, 2018. If you don’t know, Freeform did something special for that day. Freeform declared that March 29, 2018, will be International Mermaid Day. That’s just a little extra hype and will give the fans something to celebrate.

Alone Together

Wrapping up the list of upcoming 2018 shows is Alone Together. This show has been getting a lot of publicity and Freeform has been airing promos during the 25 Days of Christmas.  Even so, I consider this one as the most underrated of all the shows.

Alone Together is all about two friends living together in LA as they try to get through life. The two leads of the show are Esther Povitsky and Benji Aflalo. The two also created the series and will be executive-producing it. The show also has the backing of The Lonely Island and they also will serve as executive producers.

From the promos, the series seems funny and plays the classic fish-out-of-water trope. One good sign is the series is already renewed for a second season despite the first not airing yet. The series will premiere January 10th, 2018 at 8:30/7:30c.

As you can see, Freeform has a handful of new shows premiering in 2018. There’s basically something for everyone, no matter if you like comedies or dramas. Each show brings something different to the network and adds some variety to its lineup.

Freeform is sort of in a transitional period after ending such a huge and beloved franchise, but these new shows look promising. Either way, 2018 is going to be a big year for the network and they could even end up expanding to even more shows.

What do you think about the 2018 Freeform shows? Will you be watching any when they premiere?
