Ranking the different Castiels in Supernatural

God Castiel

After taking in all the souls from Purgatory, Castiel becomes powerful enough to take down the archangel Raphael. It was a dangerous plan and one that created God Castiel. There’s an evil side to Castiel, as he smites those he believes deserves it.

However, it’s soon clear that it’s not all Cass controlling himself. The souls, especially the Leviathans, have control. After release most of the souls back, Cass remains overpowered by the Leviathans. As his vessel deteriorates, Castiel walks into a lake and the Leviathans are released.

It’s a dark side to Castiel that we really don’t want or need to see again. Especially since it’s not actually our Castiel.

Ruler of Heaven

After the failed apocalypse, civil war broke out in the Heavens. Then along came the Leviathans, Naomi, and Metatron. Factions continually formed, but Castiel became a sort of defacto ruler of Heaven. His aim was to unite the angels again, bringing order to the mess that he’d helped to create.

While it was excellent to see him in a position of authority and in a good way, it wasn’t the best version of Castiel. He had to make some of the hardest decisions against the Winchesters, as the other angels failed to see that the Winchesters needed to act for the greater good. Castiel was later cast out because of his allegiance to the Winchesters and it led to him making some disastrous choices.
