Heading into the fall season, there was no denying that The Mayor was one of ABC’s highest profile new comedy series if not its most promoted new project aside from the network’s breakout medical drama The Good Doctor. However, despite the network’s best efforts the show never quite took off in the way ABC likely had wished and now they’re throwing in the towel and calling it a day.
Less than one week before the show’s originally slated return on Jan. 9, ABC has yanked the show from its schedule effective immediately. In its place, ABC will now air encore episodes of Modern Family which typically average more viewers than new episodes of The Mayor had been pulling in throughout the show’s first nine episodes during the 9:30 p.m. time slot.

With an average of 2.9 million total viewers throughout its first nine episode, The Mayor stood as ABC’s lowest rated comedy and least-watched comedy.
It remains to be seen whether ABC will air the show’s remaining four episodes, but no plans have been announced as of press time.
