7 Highly anticipated anime series to watch in 2018
By Aedan Juvet
2018 has many exciting anime series to offer so far, with most being continuations to already popular franchises and several that you won’t want to miss.
The trend of continuing established series has gone through film, television and now even anime as several series are being revived in some capacity. Many of them are series that haven’t aired in decades and others that feel like they just finished last year – but regardless, it’s going to be a major year for anime so we’ve taken on the responsibility of sharing what seven series are worth the hype.
Tokyo Ghoul
Tokyo Ghoul is an anime series that was slightly successful in terms of mainstream anime, but after the conclusion of Season 2 it didn’t seem as likely to continue with another series. Somehow, someone involved made a push for more Tokyo Ghoul and there is now official news (and a teaser) showing us that a third season is coming our way with fresh faces from the manga and Kaneki rocking a new look. As far as how they will follow it up because of the anime/manga differences has yet to be seen, but this is a surprisingly exciting announcement that has managed to pull me back in like Tokyo Ghoul always manages to do.

With most series being brought back under the nostalgia factor, Yu Yu Hakusho may just be the most exciting announcement thus far. After 25 years since its conception, the series has grown popularity for character growth, pulse pounding action and more heart than most anime can muster. At the moment it is currently being labeled as an original video animation, so it could be something as simple as an episode that shows us what the gang is up to now, but hopefully the excitement of fans will push it into another successful series and a legitimate sequel anime about the Spirit Detective and his comrades.

My Hero Academia
My Hero Academia has become one of animes biggest staples this year. With two seasons about a young man with heroic ambition, it is a series that resonates with everyone’s inner underdog. In a world where everyone is gifted with unique abilities My Hero Academia asks, is it the abilities or heart that makes someone a true hero – so with the third season adapting the school trip arc, it seems like the students will be given a chance to grow even more powerful than before.
Card Captor Sakura: Clear Card
Another dose of childhood nostalgia comes in the form of Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, an official sequel to the series that introduced us to Sakura Kinomoto and her adventures to capture the “cards” that materialize as a being or creature. Originally, the mission seemed to have hit completion until the new premise involves the cards all turning blank and not offering any power, so Sakura will begin her quest once again that involves much more power and higher stakes than the former series.
Gintama
The fan favorite series Gintama is approaching the final arc of the anime and fans are both thrilled and distraught. After 10 years of airing, ranking Gintama as an anime to watch for is easy because if there wasn’t interest surrounding the genre blended anime it wouldn’t have stuck around for over a decade. Having provided viewers with over 300 episodes of laughs, tears and more, anime fans are having a hard time coping with the fact that it will soon come to a close. The tone of the series will additionally take a serious approach into battle towards the concluding chapters, so fans will be eagerly anticipating Gintama until the final episode has aired sometime in 2018.
Digimon Tri: Future
When us 90’s kids watched Digimon, it tended to be a Saturday morning cartoon that spanned over several years following multiple generations but ultimately came to an end after making too many Digimon, characters and worlds that lost the magic it once had. As Digimon Tri was confirmed to follow the original Digi-Destined, it was something that nobody saw coming and set the anime fandom ablaze. Initially it was set to be a series, then was divided into six feature-length films with the final Digimon chapter coming closer to summer 2018. The film series hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype as much as hardcore fans may have hoped it would, but at the very least the last film promises some follow-through and answers that we’ve been waiting for.

Attack on Titan
Attack on Titan has truly flourished as an anime and manga, selling more than 71 million copies and becoming one of the most talked about anime series in recent years. After the first season aired, it was apparent it would be a massive hit with both Japan and the US, going on to air the English dub before Japan had even concluded the season. Part two of the series brought us more individual stories with a special focus on several supporting characters and though initially I wasn’t sure how to feel – by the time it had completed it was evident that Attack on Titan creators have a formula down and are ready for a Levi heavy third season later this year.
Next: Anime series worth adapting for television
As evident by the list above, 2018 is clearly a solid year for anime, so make sure to check some of these new titles out and let us know what you’re excited for in the comments below!
