The Altered Carbon trailer delves into the world of the cyberpunk genre where “death is no longer permanent,” leading to a sleuthing expert being brought back to life to help solve a murder.

Netflix’s Altered Carbon trailer is now up and gives insight into this cyberpunk themed genre. The movie is based on author Richard K. Morgan’s noir piece. Last month a teaser gave a succinct, but brief timeline of the events that transpired up until present day (the future).

Today’s trailer explains the “sleeving” technology. The analogy used is comparable to a “snake shedding its skin.” During this moment a consciousnesses is transferred from body to body, but can a non-physical consciousness be comparable to the more livelier part of a snake’s physical body?

"“In the distant future, human consciousness can be digitized and downloaded into different bodies. Brought back to life after 250 years by Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy) the richest man on Earth, ex-Envoy soldier Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman / Will Yun Lee) must solve Bancroft’s attempted murder for the chance to live again in a world he doesn’t recognize,” Netflix teases of the series in its official synopsis."

There have been quite a few sci-fi themed stories involving this kind of technology. Kryptonians have done it with Superman’s father in Man of Steel, Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse, Netflix’s Black Mirror anthology where “cookies” are prominent, and so on. Deadline Hollywood described it  as “Sleeper without the laughs.”

Of course, no one could ever get tired of a good consciousness transfer story, right? The trailer seems to have a Minority Report feel to it.

Next: When will season 5 of Black Mirror be released?

Altered Carbon premieres Feb. 2 on Netflix and stars Joel Kinnaman.
