Star Trek: Discovery finally reveals Voq’s true identity, but concerns over the reveal were unfounded as Michael Burnham has bigger things to worry about.

After Star Trek: Discovery fans picked through the clues, they came up with a theory that seemed a bar far-fetched. Yet, as more evidence emerged, the fan theory on Voq’s identity was true.

While the parts of the fan theory were complex, it breaks down into this simple sentence: Ash Tyler is Voq.

The Klingons tore down Voq until he was essentially just a human, putting organs and bones into place. While we were left wondering about Tyler’s memories before Star Trek: Discovery went on hiatus, the writers didn’t wait long to break the news.

In Sunday’s episode, the big reveal occurred, shocking Michael Burnham to her core. Earlier in the episode the two shared an intimate moment and spoke about how they were each other’s tether in the mirror universe. They would rely on each other to keep their sanity in a truly backwards realm.

Instead, Burnham, who revealed earlier this season she had never been in love, is blindsided by Tyler’s true identity.

While the fan theory had seemed plausible and made sense, I didn’t want it to be true. It felt like too much of a weight to put on Michael Burnham.

Even though she is a mutineer – and only getting a second chance because of Captain Lorca’s disdain for following the rules – she has been through so much. She lives with the guilt of her captain dying and being the catalyst behind the war with the Klingons.

While she developed feeling for Tyler, she knew it could never last because once her time on Discovery was over, she would be sent back to the Federation’s prison.

Yet, the writers actually did it in a way that made Voq’s true identity bearable in a sense.

First, the reveal happened while in the mirror universe and Burnham not only had her guard up but is portraying a ruthless version of herself. Any feelings she has to push down in her own universe, she could allow to the surface because being angry and violent is expected.

Second, she used Tyler’s impending death as a decoy to get information she needed to Discovery.

Third, she didn’t have time to dwell on Tyler being Voq because she learned the mirror universe version of her mentor Philipa Georgiou is the ruthless, xenophobic, sadistic emperor.

It was a good episode and I was concerned about the reveal and what it would do to Burnham. But now we have bigger things to worry about – like that other fan theory that is floating around on Captain Lorca.
