Can the introduction of Kim Delaney as Severide’s mom boost Chicago Fire?
Chicago Fire is introducing Severide’s mom but is it too little too late?
Chicago Fire is suffering from a slump. It’s focusing more on the personal lives of the fire fighters and less on the dangerous job they do. Something from the earlier seasons is missing. But now that Kim Delaney is joining the cast, things could get a bit of a shake.
The big question is whether this is too little too late.
It still takes away from the fires
Bringing in Severide’s mom will certainly help to expand Severide’s personal life. There has been so much focus on his dad that it’s easy to forget his mom his supposedly still alive. In fact, it was easy to assume that she’d passed away, since he rarely talks about her. This season he’s brought her up a lot more, especially when it came to finding Bria.

While expanding on Severide’s personal life is great, there’s still the issue of losing the focus on the fires. One thing that Chicago Fire has certainly missed is focus on the hair-raising situations. Of course, part of that problem is the knowledge that all will make it out alive anyway. After six years, something shocking needs to happen.
A sign there are still no consequences
Right now, Delaney joining the cast is a sign that Severide is definitely making it out alive from the jump off the building in the last cliffhanger ending. It continues the idea that there are no consequences for some of these terrifying and tense situations our fire fighters are put in. From a character point of view, we can’t complain.
But from a story point of view? It kind of makes the storylines a little too predictable.
However, Severide’s mom could show up because her son is hurt. Chicago Fire may go down the route of putting Severide’s career at risk. This was how the series started and it worked.

Just more heartbreak for Severide
Poor Severide tends to get the most devastating of storylines. In Season 3, Shay’s death was confirmed. In Season 5, he lost Anna. Is it possible that the show will throw another devastating curve ball?
Delaney’s character, Jennifer Sheridan, is described as a woman who used to party hard in the 1970s. However, she’s now clean and is work on rebuilding her life after her divorce. It certainly looks like she’s trying, but good stories are usually followed by bad. Until the end of the series or the exit of characters, sometimes it feels like nobody is allowed more than a minute of happiness.
If it is just more heartbreak for Severide it will be a crying shame. After years of this, he deserves something good on the show.
Bringing in Severide’s mom could be great for the show, but it could also signal more poor and disappointing storylines. It’s hard to see which way it will go right now.
