The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family)

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Kenny Baumann, Greg Finley, Darren Kagasoff, Francia Raisa, Megan Park, and Molly Ringwald

Legacy: The Secret Life of an American Teenager, at the time of its debut, broke the record for the most-watched pilot episode on the network, bringing in 2.82 million views. By its first season finale, that audience had risen to 4.5 million. That there is just a testament of its legacy.

But just how did it manage that? Well, it’s all thanks to beautiful storytelling. The series opened with Shailene Woodley’s character, Amy, learning that she was pregnant. It would be a horror story for so many teenagers, and if that wasn’t enough, the plot thickened. The father of the child is Ricky, but Amy’s current boyfriend is Ben.

Over the years, the show looked at how teenage pregnancy affects everyone. It looked at the reality of the situation for Amy, the conflict for the men in her life, the difficulty for her parents, and then later the jealousy and annoyance of her younger sister. It all reached its peak in Season 3, before tapering off in the final two seasons to wrap up the story.
