Why Killing Tony Stark in Infinity War is a bad idea
By John Dotson
As Infinity War looms closer, speculation continues to build on who will die in the upcoming film. Most people predict a Tony Stark death, and if so, this is a really bad idea. Here is why!

Robert Downey jr. teased a while back that “heads will roll” in Avengers: Infinity War. Tony Stark is the easiest target to point at for a major death, and understandably so. He is where the MCU started, dating back to the very first encounter with Nick Fury in the post-credits stinger. So, naturally, it sounds reasonable to assume this is where Tony bites the dust. The problem is this does not sound very satisfying considering the history of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Here are a few reasons… (Please be aware SPOILERS will follow)
#1 The Iron Man trilogy
The Iron Man sequels stirred debates on their quality, especially Iron Man 3, but regardless of this, the character ended on a pretty satisfying note at the end of the third film. Tony had overcome a lot of his demons, as well as finally removed the shrapnel that was endangering his heart. The character’s story arc had pushed Tony Stark to a place where he found redemption, and all was smooth in the world of Stark Industries.
If Avengers: Infinity War kills Tony Stark, it cheapens the impact of those previous films. It’s hard to re-watch Iron Man 3 and feel satisfied knowing he dies tragically several films later.
#2 Spider-Man: Homecoming
While the father and son dynamic between Tony Stark and Peter Parker seems like the perfect opportunity to make another Uncle Ben moment, the death would seem unjust considering everything Spider-Man: Homecoming setup.
The closing moments of the film saw Tony propose to Pepper Pots, and with all these years of seeing them flirt with the idea, audiences deserve to see them get hitched. They deserve to see them live happily ever after.
#3 Too predictable and serves no purpose
At this point, Tony is the predictable choice for a massive tragedy for the film. He is basically the connective tissue to the entire universe with his appearances in Civil War, and Spider-Man: Homecoming, Killing Tony does not present a purpose other than to spark a frustrated conversation on social media, which does not seem justifiable.
If they do kill Tony, I’d rather it suit the narrative, for example (Spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens) most people were probably suspecting Han Solo would die in The Force Awakens but the death made sense for the story. The death was a turning point in the saga of Kylo Ren. This is not to say Infinity War will kill Tony without a purpose, but so far, no signs point to one.
In summary, this just seems like a bad move for the character we all know and love. Tony Stark deserves to have all the promises which were so tantalizingly set up in the previous films. We need a swan song for Tony with a Stark wedding and maybe Peter Parker as the best man. The grim finale worked for Logan but it does not suit well for the future that was promised for Tony. He deserves more, and so do the fans!
