Consider this is a column that dives into hypothetical scenarios in film and television. Some will be realistic, while others might be more of a stretch. Today’s topic is about a new “Dangerous Habits” Constantine movie.

“Dangerous Habits” is a John Constantine: Hellblazer storyline written by Garth Ennis. For anyone who hasn’t read the comic, though, let’s run through a quick breakdown. Even though John has plenty of spells under his belt, he’s not someone who can cure cancer, which is what he has. Constantine is desperate to keep living and through a series of tricks up his sleeve, he succeeds.

I don’t want to give away a ton of details for anyone who would rather go read the comic, but “Dangerous Habits” is a fantastic story. It has everything you’d expect from John Constantine and I could see it being translated to the big screen. However, there’s no doubt that you’d need a new Constantine movie to be rated-R.

More from DC Movies

And yes, the 2005 Constantine film did pull from this storyline. They changed a lot of things that really make the story stand out, though. Critics had mixed reviews on the film, while fans seemed to enjoy it more. Plus, plenty of time has passed to where they can have a second go at it.

Constantine is someone we see in Legends of Tomorrow now and while Matt Ryan excels as the character, it’s a bit of a tamer version since the show is on The CW. The animated series on CW Seed is a bit edgier, but a live-action movie for “Dangerous Habits” would do DC a lot of good.

From there, DC could build out Justice League Dark if they wanted to. It’s something that fans would probably love to see. However, they could also take the route of just having it be a standalone movie. DC has cast other actors for the films, but right now I can’t see anyone in this role other than Matt Ryan. While Constantine only lasted a season, Ryan’s performance really stood out.

DC has a lot of movies in the works right now, but it might be worth taking a look at revisiting Constantine soon. They have Aquaman, Shazam!, Wonder Woman 2, Cyborg, and Green Lantern Corps in some level of development right now. Plus, Batman and Batgirl are expected to have new films coming, too.

It would be nice to see them build out their darker side of the universe instead of trying to have a darker tone with characters like Superman. No matter how unlikely it is that they’ll revisit Constantine soon, we can just keep hoping.
