#2. House of Cards

When you want a political thriller, House of Cards is the place to turn. This Netflix series has already celebrated its fifth birthday, as it dropped on the streaming service for the first time on February 1, 2013. Following a 13-episode per season format, the series was based on Michael Dobbs’ novel of the same name and also a 1990s British series of the same name.

Because it’s a Netflix show, all episodes for a season are available at the same time. That’s been the case for every season and the show is now up to 65 episodes as of the release of House of Cards Season 5 on May 30, 2017.

Starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, the series focuses on Congressman Frank Underwood, who is the House Majority Whip and Democrat. After being passed over for Secretary of State, Frank decides to enlist the help of his wife Claire to gain power through manipulation and pragmatism.

There will be a sixth season, but it will be without Spacey due to the sexual misconduct allegations last year. The final season will consist of eight episodes, taking the total episode count for the show to 73.

#3. The Blacklist

The Blacklist arguably has one of the best ever introductions of a main character. It stars James Spader and Megan Boone, and is a crime thriller with political intrigue and plenty of spy action. Of course, with Spader in one of the lead roles, there’s also comedy thrown into the mix.

Celebrating its fifth birthday on September 23, the thriller sees Raymond “Red” Reddington, who is on the FBI’s Most Wanted list, turn himself in after years on the run. He will only speak to one person: Elizabeth Keen and tells her that he will work with the FBI as an informant to get through his “blacklist.” It’s a list of names of the most powerful and dangerous people in the world, many of whom the FBI have wanted for decades.

Considering the success, NBC attempted to pick up a spin-off called The Blacklist: Redemption, but it only lasted a season before being canceled. The Blacklist is currently one of the shows on the bubble for the first time, with hopes that it will be picked up for a sixth season after the surprising success of the fifth, considering the slump the fourth season received.
