Infinity War: Should we be listening to the critics?

Avengers: Infinity War is here and the critic’s reviews are in but should we really be listening to them?

The biggest moment of the year for Marvel fans has arrived. Avengers: Infinity War has been screened by critics and the reviews are in. Critics have watched, analyzed, and delivered their views to the world on what they think about the most anticipated movie of the year.

While most fans are having trouble trying to find out if the movie is any good or not without having anything spoiled, another big question needs to be asked. Should we be listening to the critics?

Past mistakes

With the mistakes from critics in the past still fresh on our minds, it’s a valid question that needs an answer. Star Wars: The Last Jedi was hailed by critics, yet slammed by fans. Critics gave it 91% approval rating via Rotten Tomatoes. Yet when it was put to the general public it only received an approval score of 47%.

You can argue that those who don’t like something speak up more, but when it came to the Netflix Original Bright, it was the opposite. It received an average critic score of 26% but an audience approval of 85%. One of the highest discrepancies on the site.

So what do we do then?

Well, truth be told, there isn’t really anything you can do.

Realistically, there is no other alternative for you to listen to other than the critic. Anyone who is not a critic, who gives their opinion on Avengers: Infinity War, or indeed any other movie, is acting like a movie critic.

The only thing you can do is see the movie for yourself and then decide if you think it is any good or not. At the end of the day, a critic is just a person giving their opinion. The only real difference between reading about a critic’s opinion on a movie and listening to your mate’s opinion down at the pub is the critic got to see it first and probably got paid to see it.

Critics aren’t gods, they are people. They give their opinion but that is all it is. An opinion. You might agree with them, and then again you may not. Read what they say, take in what they think, but don’t take what they say as gospel. If they say it’s a good movie then there is a good chance it will be but there is still no guarantee and vice a versa.

Allow yourself to go in open-minded and think. Ok, so and so said it was ok, but so and so said it was great and so and so said it was awful. Let’s see who was right.
