The Vida Series Premiere sees Emma and Lyn return home after the death of their mother. Soon secrets are revealed and they need to go on a journey of self-discovery to figure out what to do next.

After the death of their mom, Emma and Lyn are pulled back to their old neighborhood. They quickly learn that their mom had been keeping secrets, and not just the fact that she had a roommate.

It all starts with their mom’s death. Emma and Lyn are forced to talk, despite being estranged. Lyn still kept in touch with her mom but didn’t talk too much. Emma doesn’t know anything about her mom’s life and is instantly angry that her sister knew some of the secrets. What Emma doesn’t realize until the funeral is that her mom had bragged about her successful daughter in Chicago.

During the funeral, Vida’s roommate, Eddy, struggles to cope with the death. Everyone seems to know some sort of secret, but nobody is telling Lyn and Emma.

Meanwhile, Lyn watches an old flame, Johnny, who brought his pregnant fiancée to the funeral, from the side. When he helps take a knife away from Eddy, Lyn decides to talk to him in private, although it certainly leads to more than just talking. After they reconnect, they start fighting again showing there is far more to this story. They don’t get into it, though, as Johnny shares that he came to the funeral to support Eddy since her wife has just died. That’s the first Lyn hears of Eddy and her mom being together.

While outside the bar that Vida owned, Emma meets with someone who is interested in helping to sell the building. However, Lyn stops the conversation to tell Emma about Eddy. It turns out Eddy and Vida were married for two years and that’s why Eddy knows so much about Vida’s wishes. One of the wishes is that the whole building where the bar is located is split three ways.

Emma pulls Lyn out of the apartment to clear their heads. Lyn doesn’t understand Emma’s resentment and homophobic comments. However, they decide to get something to eat and Lyn shares her dreams for the future, including opening a store. Emma also makes it clear that they need to sell the building, but Lyn points out that there are many undocumented tenants and they’ll be homeless. Emma refuses to listen, especially since neither she and Lyn are willing to run the bar.

They run into Johnny’s little sister, Mari, who makes it extremely clear that the two aren’t welcome anymore. They’re looked down on because they decided to leave.

When they return, Eddy wants to talk about the situation. Eddy has already heard about the man Emma spoke to and shares all the negativity about the situation. Clearly, Eddy doesn’t want Emma to turn to him to sell the building.
