Television network Starz is known for producing some great period dramas like Becoming Elizabeth, The Spanish Princess, The White Princess, and more. Or what about Outlander? It’s definitely one of my favorite shows! And in September 2022, we were introduced to The Serpent Queen! Since the show made its debut and aired its finale, we’ve been wanting more. So what do you need to know about The Serpent Queen season 2?

The series was created by Justin Haythe and is produced by Nick O’Hagan. Those serving as executive producers include Stacie Passon, Justin Haythe, Francis Lawrence, and Erwin Stoff. Here’s all we know about the second season ahead of its release!

Has The Serpent Queen season 2 release date been announced? (where to watch)

Unfortunately at this time, we don’t have a release date for The Serpent Queen season 2. Starz has not shared an official premiere date yet. But, the network has confirmed that The Serpent Queen season 2 is coming sometime in 2024! It’s not clear whether the show was affected by the writers strike and actors strike like so many other productions, or if the company has just chosen to hold on to it a bit longer.

The period drama first premiered Sept. 11, 2022 on Starz. Then a few days ahead of the season 1 finale in October 2022, the network announced the show would be back for a second season. At this point it’s been more than a year since the series first debuted. Since the series got a renewal in late 2022, it’s possible that work on the scripts and filming had begun, but maybe they weren’t finished. Unfortunately unless Starz shares any information on what stage of filming the show is in, we’re just taking guesses here.

Upon green lighting the second season, it was also shared that The Serpent Queen season 2 will be a total of eight episodes just like the first season. Season 1 of the show is currently streaming on the Starz app. The platform usually costs $8.99/month if you’re not subscribed, though they do often provide offers to get it at a cheaper price for a limited time. We expect season 2 to potentially return to those Sunday night timeslots on television, and stream on the Starz app at midnight ET the same day.

What could the second season be about?

An official synopsis for the next installment in the story has not been shared yet. Overall, the series is a dramatized story of the real-life 16th century Queen of France Catherine de’ Medici. We follow her life from when she marries King Henri II at the age of 14. She arrives to the French court young, but has a smart mind that she uses to politically maneuver her way through royal life and eventually serve as the Queen of France for 30 years.

The first season brought with it many twists and turns, and it was definitely not short of any drama. We can’t wait to see what comes next in the monarch’s story! Again, we continue to wait for more information.

The Starz project is based on the 2004 nonfiction novel Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by author Leonie Frieda. Plus, of course the characters are based on real people from the 16th century. These were real-life rulers in France and the series is based on certain events and historical accounts we know about them.

The end of the first season saw Catherine solidify her role in the court even more. Following the death of her husband and king, Henri II, now of course the title has to move on to the next heir. We see the coronation of their 11-year-old son Charles IX. And it’s Catherine herself who places the crown on his head. While he might be king, it’s really the queen who will be doing the ruling.

Cast: Who could be returning?

A cast list hasn’t been announced yet, though we of course should definitely have actress Samantha Morton back. After all, she plays the titular character herself! There’s some other actors we expect to see return based on their roles. We shared those possibly coming back below:

  • Samantha Morton as Catherine de’ Medici
  • Liv Hill as Young Catherine (may possibly get more flashbacks)
  • Yngve Sanchez Beuthe as Charles IX, Catherine’s son
  • Amrita Acharia as Aabis
  • Enzo Cilenti as Cosimo Ruggeri
  • Sennia Nanua as Rahima
  • Kiruna Stamell as Mathilde

Samantha Morton is an English actress who has been a part of many impressive projects like Lowdown, In America, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and The Whale. This also isn’t the star’s first time portraying a historical figure. She played Mary, Queen of Scots in the 2007 movie Elizabeth: The Golden Age.

Starz has confirmed lots of new cast members joining the show, 10 to be exact! Those include Minnie Driver, Isobel Jesper Jones, and Alexandre Willaume in recurring roles. Check out the full list of new cast members and who they're playing below. The descriptions of the characters are courtesy of a Starz press release:

  • Minnie Driver joins as “Elizabeth I” the infamous ‘Virgin Queen.’ Elizabeth goes toe-to-toe with Catherine and is a woman of style, wit and experience.
  • Angus Imrie joins as “Henry IV” the son of Antoine de Bourbon and Jeanne d'Albret, he appears uncivilized, to the unobservant observer but in reality, he is quite an intellect.
  • Emma McDonald joins as “Rahima” who viewers first met in season one. Rahima has grown in wit and confidence and now has assumed an important position in Catherine’s life.
  • Stanley Morgan joins as “Anjou” the younger brother of King Charles, who is non-conforming and capable of disruptive violence.
  • Philippine Velge joins as “Margot” Catherine’s eldest daughter, who is her polar opposite. Incredibly charming, liked by all and seeks the truth.
  • Rosalie Craig joins as “Jeanne d'Albret” the self-righteous and disapproving wife of Antonie de Bourbon.
  • Isobel Jesper Jones joins as “Edith,” a protestant preacher to a group of loyal followers.
  • Bill Milner joins as “King Charles IX” the oldest son of Catherine de Medici, and the now King of France. Not a boy, but not quite a man, he is anxious to play king and get it right.
  • Ashley Thomas joins as “Alessandro de Medici” a man possessed with great charisma and beauty and is the object of desire.
  • Alexandre Willaume joins as “Montmorency” the wise and humorless Constable General of France. He is a loyal and serious servant of the king.
