Timeless heads to San Francisco in 1888 to find Jiya – despite her warning to them not to come.

Timeless has been leading up to some very specific moments all season. The whole season has been asking some very difficult questions about family, love and fixed points in time. For example Alice Paul is found dead, despite her importance within the suffragette movement and her legacy is completely removed from history, forcing Lucy to feel guilty for being the only person to remember her. It’s a subtle tie-in to the work they do and how the things they change both alter history, themselves, but also leave very little sign that they were apart of something bigger than anyone can imagine.

It’s significant within the current timeline because since the mid-way point of the season Jiya (Claudia Doumit) has been warning Rufus (Malcolm Barrett) of his death. Of course we’ve heard multiple characters reiterate the sentiment that “some things can’t be changed” but that hasn’t stopped Wyatt (Matt Lanter) from trying to prevent Jessica’s (Tonya Ganz) death in the same way it hasn’t stopped Flynn (Goran Visnijc) from seeking revenge for the death of his family.

Spoilers ahead…

When Jessica takes Jiya hostage and steals the Lifeboat (leading to the line “Rittenhouse has the Lifeboat” which was a chaotic moment but still lacked the obvious pop culture reference from Doctor Who “The angels have the phonebox” (come on Kripke do better!). That’s a personal bit of nitpicking and hardly a spoiler but I was disappointed and so it felt worth mentioning.

More from NBC

Episode 10 rips right through all the emotions that have been simmering within the bunker all season. The truth about Jessica comes out to Flynn who immediately blames Wyatt and the two start to argue. Punches are thrown and when Lucy (Abigail Spencer) tries to intervene Wyatt accidentally hits her. Causing everyone to pause. Of course Wyatt didn’t mean it but add to the pile of ways he’s totally screwed up his relationship with Lucy in the past and in the present.

Meanwhile, Carol Preston (Susanna Thompson) welcomes Jiya to the Rittenhouse hideout by forcing her to take a sleeping pill. She manages to escape but Emma (Annie Wesching) damages the Lifeboat while shooting at her, which causes Jiya to be unable to stick the landing and get lost in time. Of course this has happened before the the team gets to work scouring books and photos to find a sign of where she might be and how to get to her. Sure enough Lucy finds her picture in the book she and her mother wrote, with coordinates for the Lifeboat and a warning not to come.

Once Mason and Rufus repair the Lifeboat’s busted navigation the entire team heads to Chinatown, San Francisco in 1888 – where the Mothership is already headed. It’s risky to have all four go since they’ll need to bring back Jiya but someone from the team can be left behind, it’s an all-hands on deck sort of situation – especially once the team finds out that Jiya has been three years from when the photo she left them to find was taken!

Everything goes down pretty fast when Carol tries to prevent Emma from shooting Lucy. Emma loses her patience and kills the Rittenhouse superiors. Lucy’s mother’s dying regret is that she didn’t indoctrinate her daughter into Rittenhouse sooner. And acknowledges that they have always been running from the inevitable. In Lucy’s original timeline it was cancer. Here it’s a gunshot wound.

The focus of course is Jiya’s vision and her inability to change Rufus’ fate. In real time though she does. Though the celebratory mood is fleeting and leads to Lucy very nearly shooting Emma. The team returns to the present worse for the wear and at a major loss.
