Each summer there’s that one show that deviates from the usual outpouring of prestige seasonal series. This year, that honor belongs to ABC’s Take Two, an unassuming odd-couple dramedy from the creators of Castle and starring two reliable TV veterans in Rachel Bilson and Eddie Cibrian. If you’re looking to beat the heat with an amusing hour of escapism each week, look no further than the new series the network’s touting as “summer’s sexiest ride along.”
Take Two centers on fallen star Sam Swift (Rachel Bilson), whose run on a 200-plus episode procedural drama hits a snag via her highly publicized breakdown. After tumbling out of a limo without any undergarments, Sam heads to rehab and starts the search for her big comeback. When another role playing a detective comes across her agent’s desk, Sam goes method and tags along with private investigator Eddie Valetik (Eddie Cibrian) to research for the part. But the pair, of course, begrudgingly hit it off, and Sam’s TV knowledge helps close cases.
If that description sounds familiar, it’s because Take Two comes from Andrew W. Marlowe and Terri Edda Miller, who helmed ABC’s Castle for eight successful seasons of romantic-procedural excitement. Rachel Bilson, star of The O.C. and Hart of Dixie, returns to television alongside Eddie Cibrian, and their combined comedic talents on such an unabashedly fun series is sure to be the underrated escapist delight of the summer.
Will Sam switch careers after her strangely enjoyable turn as Eddie’s partner in crime solving? Does Eddie grow to rely on Sam’s help, as stress-inducing as it might be?
