It may already be August, but there are plenty of great summer movies still ahead!

The summer movie season is in full swing, bringing us some amazing blockbusters, along with the wide releases of some former festival darlings. The month of August sees many tent pole studio films, lots of comedies and some familiar faces returning to the big screen.

Let’s take a look at the movies this month that promise to get the most butts in seats!

Christopher Robin

Disney’s milking of their own IP continues with yet another live action adaptation of an animated classic, Winnie the Pooh.

While there’s been another Pooh movie recently, this one seems a lot more light-hearted, joyous, and aimed to bring the nostalgia and cheer for new and old audiences alike. With realistic depictions of all the classic animated characters, Christopher Robin looks to take generations back to their childhood with a story that is aimed at the child in all of us.

Unlike Disney’s other live action adaptations of existing animated stories, Christopher Robin looks to bring the iconic characters to the bring screen with a story that acknowledges their classic status as fictional characters who have had adventures, within a child’s imagination. The story focuses on how, in their time of need, they travel to the ‘real world’ to meet that grown up child, who is now a man, in Christopher Robin.

The trailer seems to pack almost the entire movie in its 2 minutes and 44 seconds, but the excitement of seeing these characters on-screen again, in a live action adaptation that is super meta, will be too good to pass up for generations that grew up with these stories, and quite possibly, their children today.

The Spy Who Dumped Me

The Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon starrer, The Spy Who Dumped Me, seemed to be run of the mill action-comedy with its first trailer. But I’m glad I gave the second trailer a watch, because it definitely makes the movie seem so much better!

When a woman and her friend gets caught up in the misadventures of her former lover, who also happens to be a spy, hilarious hijinks ensue. That is basically the premise of this movie, which is made impressive solely on the backs of its main leads, and impressive supporting cast.

The trailer gives a great sense of awesome action, outrageous comedy that doesn’t seem to pander or consist of potty humor; always a plus point for comedies in my book. The Spy Who Dumped Me looks like a pretty fun movie, great for a summer date night, or group outing.

Searching

Searching is being heralded as the movie that changes the way we watch movies. Seemingly made entirely from the perspective of a father on his Macbook computer screen, the film uses web cams, video calling, and shows us the story from the screen of a laptop, instead of any other conventional means of visual storytelling.

The film is about a father searching for his missing daughter, by combing through her social media and talking to her friends. It’s an innovative approach, and the trailer definitely conveys a sense of panic and dread as we watch events unfold on a computer; as if we’re living it.

The Meg

The Meg can be most easily described as, a completely outrageous throwback to Jaws, that looks slightly less outrageous than Sharknado. Based on a book, the story about a prehistoric shark that’s massively huge, looks unexpectedly fun. Especially with Jason Statham on board, it’s going to be a fun ride.

While most movies like this try to be too serious and ends up being super cheesy, The Meg seems to revel in the fact that it is completely bonkers, nutty, and an unrealistic monster movie that is just good for a fun group outing to the theaters.

The trailers plays campy old school music with scenes of shark attacks and things blowing up that make The Meg look like a ridiculous good time!

BlackKlansman

Spike Lee is back with a bang with the son of Denzel Washington himself, in BlacKkKlansman! And this movie looks like it’s all kinds of explosively poignant and humorous, all at the same time.

Lee seems to be tackling racial issues in present day America, with a true story about how a Black police officer infiltrated the Ku Klux Klax. The trailer for BlacKkKlansman looks hilarious, meaningful and very reminiscent of the blaxploitation films of the 60’s, which is most likely intentional.

Starring John David Washington and Adam Driver, this movie looks like its going to be one helluva ride, and has already been getting a lot of buzz from critics.

Crazy Rich Asians

An all out rom-com about family drama featuring an all Asian cast, set in Singapore? Yes please! The trailer for Crazy Rich Asians is all about how an Asian-American girl meets the man of her dreams, only to find out that he comes from old-money back in East Asia.

The premise of girl-meets-boy’s-family is very familiar, but the added cultural vibes of Crazy Rich Asians looks to represent a minority that have been rarely explored in mainstream Hollywood movies. The conflict also feels so universal that it can be relatable to anyone of any ethnicity, and not just for minorities.

Crazy Rich Asians looks, feels and definitely has the potential to be a great movie in general, with all the laughs, feels and drama of a movie of this genre.

The Happytime Murders

A twisted take on Sesame Street, but for adults, comes in the form of The Happytime Murders. When puppets start getting killed in the land of Muppets, a former PI has to reunite with his former partner to solve the case.

The Happytime Murders stars Melissa McCarthy, along with The Muppets veteran Bill Barretta bringing his illustrious muppet career to the big screen in a way that’s never been seen before!

The Happytime Murders are an unbelievably adult version of a genre that’s usually reserved for children, or all ages. The incredibly graphic nature of the content, coupled with the fact that its muppets, is a novelty that needs to be experienced!
