Disney: Why Christopher Robin will be an underrated gem

Releasing later this year, Disney’s Christopher Robin has been overshadowed by their big releases but has a chance at being one of their biggest surprises.

2018 is a huge year for Disney films. They’re releasing multiple sequels, films from different properties and heading into the live-action realm again. Most of the films are getting a lot of buzz around them and with good reason. One film no one seems to be talking about much is Christopher Robin.

The film has an anticipated release for August 2018. It might be hard to believe, but it’s a vastly underrated film. Yes, the media is covering the trailer but no one seems particularly excited about it, which is sad. With all the big budget and exciting films coming out, Christopher Robin is poised to be a hidden gem for Disney.

Looking at all the characters Disney has to its name, Winnie the Pooh isn’t exactly the most popular. Young fans are looking more towards Moana, Cars and Beauty and the Beast but many older fans remember the hay-day of the beloved old bear. Winnie the Pooh used to be a classic staple for Disney including multiple TV adaptations, movies, and merchandise.

Since the early 2010’s, Winnie the Pooh has gone to the backburner. There was an animated release in 2011, but it grossed only around $20 million more than it cost to make. It was basically a financial failure, but there’s where Christopher Robin comes in. You can check out the trailer below.

The main reason it will be successful is the nostalgia factor. A lot of fans enjoyed Winnie the Pooh when they were younger and will get a chance to revisit the world. Even though the trailer doesn’t give any clues to the Hundred Acre Woods, the story will eventually take us there.

If nostalgia doesn’t pull people in, the casting will. In the film, Robin is played by Ewan McGregor and his wife is played by Hayley Atwell, two brilliant film stars. As for the voice acting, some of our favorite characters are getting updated but Jim Cummings is voicing Winnie the Pooh.

Christopher Robin is going to be a great way to get grown-ups in touch with their childhood if only for a moment. For some kids, it will their introduction to Winnie the Pooh and hopefully, get them interested in the character.

Disney was very strategic when they decided to release Christopher Robin. Not only will they market a new audience to Winnie the Pooh, but get fans interested again. It’s a basically a win-win and part of the reason why the movie will be so successful.

Granted, Christopher Robin probably won’t gross anything near what Incredibles 2 or Avengers: Infinity War will. Regardless, the movie has a chance at critical and commercial success. As one of Disney’s more underrated projects this year, it should have fans clamoring for their next live-action feature.
