9. In the Valley of Elah

Original Release Date: Sept. 28, 2007

Box Office Earnings:   $133,557 (USA opening weekend), $6,777,741 (USA gross)

Critical Acclaim: Tommy Lee Jones was nominated for Best Performance By an Actor in a Leading Role by the Academy. In the valley of Elah won the National Board of Review award for Best Independent Film and the SIGNIS award at the Venice Film Festival. There were 18 other nominations.

About the Role: Brolin takes on the role of Chief Buchwald in the movie. While he’s the sheriff in town, he’s not interested in the case brought to him. He doesn’t quite hinder in the way that others do, but he’s not exactly going to go out of his way to help get to the bottom of conspiracies and get the answers the parents need and deserve.

Simply the Best: While the movie is unapologetically angry and a cinematic masterpiece, Josh Brolin doesn’t have the largest role in it. Since this is all about his greatest movie hits, In the Valley of Elah has to go a little further down the list because of that. However, it is certainly one that you need to watch.

Starring Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron, it’s about two parents who just want justice for their murdered son. Everyone is disinterested or trying to cover something up, which makes it a heartbreaking tale.
