CultureFly offers a Supernatural mystery box on a quarterly basis. The third volume was released and here’s a review of the items included. It was definitely worth the money this month.

I decided it was time to get the Supernatural mystery box from CultureFly. I got the second volume and it instantly made me think about canceling. It just wasn’t that impressive. The Supernatural 3 mystery box was certainly worth the money, so I am definitely glad I didn’t cancel.

For those who haven’t heard, CultureFly offers a quarterly mystery box. Everything is guaranteed to be linked to Supernatural and you get more than $120 worth of items for the just short of $50 box.

Vol. 2 was full of items that either wasn’t useful to me or didn’t last long. The Dean vinyl didn’t look anything like Dean Winchester, the cosplay outfit was fun but nothing I’d wear, and the color changing glass lasted two washes before the color changing anti-possession symbol literally wiped off without any pressure!

There were two items I liked: the candle holder and the messenger bag. So, I did consider canceling the subscription but thought I’d give the third box a chance as I liked the look of the first one (I wish I got it for the walkman EMF plant holder!

What did I get in the Supernatural 3 mystery box?

The image above shows everything that came in the box. It’s a good collection, offering a mixture of wearables, a vinyl and props, and useable items. Overall, I was impressed.

Sure, there are some items I’ll never use or I just wasn’t impressed with, but that was the minority this time. There were other items that I definitely think were worth the money I spent.

First the bad: The vinyl and the artwork

I’ll start with the bad from the Supernatural 3 mystery box. The vinyl is the same type as the Dean Winchester vinyl, but this time Castiel. I have the same complaints as I do with the Dean one. This just doesn’t look like Castiel. Well, okay, you can tell it’s meant to be him, but it doesn’t look as good as the Pop! figurines that are out.

I have the figures on display at the moment, but they’re likely going to end up in storage or passed on. I’d rather not have a vinyl figurine at all. I’m also assuming Sam Winchester will be in next quarter’s box.

The other item I’m disappointed in is the artwork. It’s key art from one of the Supernatural seasons. I’m not the biggest fan of key art posters, so I know this disappointment is more personal than overall for the quality of the box.

The annoying thing for me is that the key art is Supernatural Season 6. If they really wanted to add key art posters to each box, working by season in order would have been better. Use the first season for the first box, the second season for the second, and so on. So far, the key art has been random.

The mediocre items: The cards

Most of the items I was really impressed with. There’s one set that is okay–I wouldn’t choose to buy them. They’re the cards, which feature different sayings and images throughout the season. There are some iconic lines from the show, including “Saving people. Hunting things. The family business.”

These cards are good if you want to put them on display. They’re designed to send to friends, but would you really want to use them in that way? I suppose they have their uses, but for me they will probably go into a Supernatural display case when I have one.

Lastly the good: The wearables and replica

There are two wearables in Supernatural 3 mystery box, which is awesome. The first is a T-shirt that is perfect for the anniversary coming up. It’s all about Castiel. Considering his 10th anniversary on the show is coming up, I hope that this was all planned out.

The T-shirt quality is soft on the skin and feels durable. I got a large size, as I like my T-shirts a little baggy, but it’s a snug fit. I’d suggest going the size up when you’re ordering. One good thing is the neckline isn’t too tight. I hate T-shirts that are close to the neck, but this sits around the collarbone.

Bobby’s hat is another wearable. Well, it looks like Bobby’s hat in color and design, but it says “Idjits.” My only complaint is the branding of the mystery box at the front of the hat. This would have been better on the back.

The hat isn’t the best fit, but I do have a small head. It’s come in use this summer though!

The third is the mini replica of the First Blade. The material quality feels good and there’s a decent weight to the item, so it actually feels like you’re holding a mini First Blade. There’s also some good detail to the blade and the teeth. It works well with my Pop! collection.

My favorite items: Beach towel and water bottle

I have two items that I adore from this mystery box. The first is a reusable metal water bottle. It has a mixture of symbols all over it and a screw cap that you can easily hook to a carabiner on the messenger bag from last quarter’s box.

As we encourage more people to step away from throwaway plastic bottles, it’s good to see CultureFly getting involved. A reusable water bottle is worth far more than the initial cost for one since you can avoid paying a few dollars for plastic bottles of it on a daily basis. Plus, who says you have to just put water in it?

My second favorite is the beach towel. It’s a circular towel with a devil’s trap on it and goes perfectly with Bobby’s hat. While it’s likely an item that won’t get much use during most of the year here in Canada, I do have a beach right next to me for the summer months.

Plus, nobody says I have to use it as a towel! I could use it as a throw on the couch or the bottom of the bed. Well, I would if I didn’t have a husky that sheds hair EVERYWHERE all the time!

As I didn’t unravel the whole towel, I’ve included a photo of the card that comes with the Supernatural 3 mystery box to show you want the devil’s trap looks like.

This box has certainly made me keep my subscription for another quarter. We’ll see how the next one goes.
