Read No Exit

Chidi’s soulmate is books, so what better way to while away the hours by burying your nose in a lovely table of contents? In all seriousness though, books make up the bedrock of The Good Place. And, according to many sources on NBC’s The Good Place Podcast, the series itself owes a great debt to the classic Jean Paul Sartre play, No Exit.

When creating the show, Mike Schur had a puzzle piece click into place when he realized that the situation he wanted to create was similar to Sartre’s one-act play. No Exit revolves around three people trapped in hell, doomed to torture one another for all eternity. It’s a slim volume, so if you don’t love reading, it won’t take much time off your hands. Have three dramatic friends? You can even act it out for funsies!

If No Exit isn’t enough for your book-loving brain, you can check out a whole host of volumes that have been featured in the show. Earlier this year, a bookstore in Oxford made the news by offering up a special section of books inspired by Chidi’s ethics-focused reading list, including T.S. Scanlan’s oft-cited “What We Owe One Another”. Dive in and learn more about ethics so you can be the smartest kid in class whenever the series returns with new episodes.
