Enamored with the idea of stories that mull over the greater philosophies of the universe? There are a whole host of movies that can scratch that itch for you. Below is a selection of films that hit on themes similar to The Good Place.

  • Defending Your Life – After an ad executive (Albert Brooks) dies, he’s made to review key moments of his life in front of a celestial committee so that they may decide whether he can move on to the next phase of existence or be reincarnated to try again on Earth. Along the way, he meets a woman named Julia (Meryl Streep) and falls in love.
  • I Heart Huckabees – During a time of personal crisis, environmental activist Albert (Jason Schwartzman) hires two existential detectives (Lily Tomlin and Dustin Hoffman) to help him sort out an odd coincidence. As they teach Albert about the different tenets of philosophy, they also recruit several other clients (Jude Law, Naomi Watts, and Mark Wahlberg) and assist them in finding the true meaning of their lives. Hilarity ensues.
  • Heart and Souls – A motley crew of deceased souls (Charles Grodin, Alfrie Woodard, Tom Sizemore, and Tahani’s dear friend Kyra Sedgwick) work to sort out their unfinished business with the help of Thomas (Robert Downey Jr.), the only human who can see them.
