28. Season 3, Episode 23, “The Other Side of This Life, Part 2”

If you’ve ever had the hiccups since this episode, you’ve likely wondered if they mean something more. After all, Susan Grey went into the hospital just for a severe case of hiccups. That ended up developing complications and she died. It was shocking and crazy but didn’t prepare us for the final parts of the episode that had us in tears.

While her death was certainly sad, there are other factors at play that make this one of the saddest episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and guaranteed to make you cry. One of those is the fact that Meredith had just started to warm up to her stepmom. There’s no denying that Susan was a lovely woman who everyone wanted in their life.

The second factor is what it did to Thatcher. This episode sees him completely breaking down. Susan has been the one to keep him steady this whole time and he blames her death on Meredith. Many of us were shocked as Thatcher shouted at his daughter for everything, before walking away. Later, this would be the thing to push him over the edge of becoming an alcoholic.

While there are many deaths you can see coming early on in the episodes, this wasn’t one of them. Grey’s Anatomy Season 3, Episode 23 reminded us right away that sometimes the simplest things can lead to major health problems and death. Hands up if you feel like crying with memories of this episode every time you get the hiccups?
