Greatest Grey’s Anatomy Doctors – No. 12: Dr. Craig Thomas

Sometimes, the best doctors are those who weren’t around for long. Dr. Craig Thomas was on the show for just a handful of episodes, but he certainly left a mark. This was a man who just wanted to save lives. Sometimes those lives weren’t on his operating table.

For those who don’t remember, Dr. Thomas was at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Played by the brilliant William Daniels, he helped Cristina in the aftermath of the plane crash. With experience of plane crashes himself, he was able to connect with her in a way that nobody else could.

As he helped Cristina come to terms with everything and understand more about life, he also lent her a friendly ear. Not once did he ever expect anything from Cristina, making him a selfless and wonderful human being.

Dr. Thomas’ weakness was his surgical techniques. They were old-school and causing problems for other doctors. Rather than allow himself to be forced out, he took on board Cristina’s suggestions and started to pick up new techniques, techniques that he’d previously been afraid of. The two of them were perfect for each other.

However, his old-school techniques still had their place. Something he taught Cristina was that sometimes the riskier surgeries are more beneficial in the long-run.

Dr. Thomas is one of the biggest losses to Grey’s Anatomy. However, his loss showed us Cristina’s true skills in the OR. I’m not sure who his death hit the most: her or us.
