Disney+ Service: 5 things we need in the Falcon and Winter Soldier MCU mini-series
By Shah Shahid
A Falcon origin story
Sam Wilson (Mackie) has been Falcon since his first appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This is also when he first crossed paths with Bucky Barnes (Stan), a.k.a. The Winter Soldier himself.
Introduced as a war veteran who runs into Captain America during their morning runs, Sam was the only person that Cap could turn to in a moment of need. Thus began a friendship between Cap and Sam that would eventually rival that of his friendship with Bucky, with pretty hilarious consequences.

Sam has been there for Cap ever since, appearing next in a brief scene of Avengers: Age Of Ultron, as well as an in-costume cameo during Ant-Man. Since then, Sam’s Falcon has been a regular part of The Avengers crew, flying around and kicking butt as needed. But we’ve never really gotten to know the character beyond these appearances as an established hero.
Even in comparison to Bucky Barnes, who has been around since the first Captain America movie, we know very little about Sam. All we really know is what we’ve been shown, which invokes more questions than answers. What kind of a war veteran comes home, helps out some strangers one day, steals a pair of mechanical wings in the process, and just ends up being a full-time superhero? What kind of a person was Sam Wilson before he became the Falcon?
One of the first things the new series needs to establish is a proper origin story for Sam Wilson. I’m hoping that’s one of the reasons that Falcon was chosen for his own series, to further explore his backstory and flesh out his character more, thereby enhancing his future appearances within the MCU.
If Falcon is going to support the weight of a series, we as the audience need to care about him more than just being Cap’s throwaway friend when Bucky isn’t around.
