What really happened to Rosa Ortecho?

Early on we learn that Rosa Ortecho, Liz’s sister, died in a car crash. In the crash she killed two innocent people and ever since the Ortecho name has drawn ire and scorn from citizens of Roswell who blame the Ortecho’s for the death and destruction Rosa caused.

The hatred for the Ortecho’s is a mixture of thinly veiled racism and a long-held grudge. The show does not hold back in its timely political and social commentary and while at times it felt too on-the-nose, I also found it refreshing to see a television show with a younger-skewing demographic take aim at our societal issues in a bold and outspoken manner.

Talk of immigration, deportation, walls, and the like abound in the premiere to establish the discrimination the Ortecho family has been facing for years and Liz’s reluctance to stay in Roswell after she did her best to escape. This hatred culminates in a diner shooting that kills Liz, Max is forced to use his abilities to save her.

Except, apparently there is more to Rosa’s death than it appears, something Isabelle references to Max and Max abruptly cuts her off. “She can never know what happened to Rosa.” Ooh, intrigue. I’m suspecting her “car crash” was not really a car crash at all, or it was definitely caused by alien interference. I’ll be thinking up theories in the weeks to come until they decide to reveal this juicy secret.
