The Room Where It Happens

The bathroom where Nadia keeps regenerating after her deaths is actually pretty amazing. It’s got pitch black subway tiling, a giant gold mirror, and killer lighting. And, oh, yeah, a GIANT GLOWING BLUE VAGINA ON THE DOOR.

Vulture spoke to production designer Michael Bricker about how they came up with the concept for the bathroom. Bricker stated that the description of the ornate door itself, right down to the gun handle, was in the script, but executing the concept was a whole other thing.

However, the most interesting tidbit of information concerns the contrast between Nadia’s reset point and Alan’s. Bricker noted that before the death day twins meet, they’re living in inverse worlds. Alan’s color palate is bland and boring, whereas Nadia’s is awash with color. As the two begin to infiltrate each other’s worlds, however, they have a marked impact on one another. Bricker states, “His world becomes messier, [and] hers becomes a little bit cleaner.”

One thing that Bricker was particularly coy about was the meaning behind that galactic door in Maxine’s apartment. He said, “it really works, that the audience wants this door to mean something, and you can decide if it does or doesn’t.”
