“I see dead people” might be one of the Top 5 most famous movie quotes of all time. Just think of how many times you have heard — or said — that four-word phrase out of context but knew exactly where it came from. The Sixth Sense was the rare supernatural horror film that had both mass appeal and enough high-brow standard to sneak its way into the Academy Awards. Even without a Best Picture win, the film shaped the popular trends for years to come, which is the true mark of an iconic movie.

From director M. Night Shyamalan, The Sixth Sense centers on Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), a young boy haunted by the secret that he can see ghosts, er, dead people. Cole opens about his secret to child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis), and they soon discover the shocking truth about Cole’s supernatural abilities. What probably propelled The Sixth Sense into being the highest-grossing horror movie (until It took its place in 2017) is one of the most talked-about twists in movie history.

The Sixth Sense was nominated for (ironically) six awards at the 72nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Haley Joel Osment, Best Supporting Actress for Toni Collette, and Best Editing. Unfortunately, the film didn’t win any Oscars, and American Beauty took home the award for Best Picture. It’s not as shocking as the film’s twist that the horror flick didn’t win the top honor, but its impact is undying.
