13. Webber/Ellis/Adele
When it happened: Before the series started, there was a love triangle between Dr. Webber, Ellis Grey, and Adele Webber. It was the affair of all affairs.
Who was caught in the middle? This is one that didn’t really have a middle. Webber, in a way, was the one having to choose between two women, but Adele was the victim in this love triangle.
What it led to: The affair between Ellis and Webber led to the birth of Maggie Pierce. She would be adopted and we wouldn’t know about her until later into Grey’s Anatomy, but without the affair, we wouldn’t have her – or the sweet relationship she has with Meredith and Amelia.
The affair also helped to create the bond between Meredith and Webber. As much as Meredith used to make it clear that Webber wasn’t her father, she certainly looked up to him as a father figure.

Why it’s one of the best This is one of those love triangles that I personally hate. So why is it on the list? Well, it’s one of the most important love triangles and that’s what makes it so brilliant. Without Webber and Ellis’ affair, there is no way that many of the storylines in Grey’s Anatomy could have ever made sense.
Meredith’s psychological issues come a little from Ellis’ treatment of Thatcher and running away with Ellis to Boston. Meredith’s fear of commitment to men also link back to this. Then there are her daddy issues, which come from that strained relationship with her own father and the way Webber had sort of taken that place.
So, as much as I don’t like it, it really is one of the best for the series as a whole.
