14. Derek/Addison/Mark

When it happened: Before the season began, Addison and Mark had an affair. Derek walked out and that was when he picked up the job at Seattle Grace.

Who was caught in the middle? Addison, in a way, was caught in the middle, as she was the one who had to choose between the two. When Addison returned for Derek, Mark followed her to continue the complicated storyline.

What it led to: The love triangle certainly gave us plenty of drama and led to another love triangle (we’ll get to that later). However, in itself, it led to Mark moving on and finding love with someone else (again, we’ll get to that), Addison moving on and into her own spin-off Private Practice, and Derek finding love with Meredith.

Why it’s one of the best Without this love triangle, we wouldn’t have had the will they/won’t they storylines of the earlier seasons. Throughout the first season, we got to fall in love with the idea of Meredith and Derek. Then Addison showed up, quickly followed by Mark.

While Derek and Addison attempted to make their marriage work, Mark and Meredith were able to create an interesting bond as the “dirty mistresses,” leading to that friendship. It also led to Meredith and Derek finally being together, something that many fans had wanted to see all along.
